150 years of educational excellence at kean university

Kean University - Kean University celebrates its 150th birthday in 2005 as one of New Jersey’s largest institutions of higher learning, renowned for the high quality of its teaching and its graduates.

In 1958, Kean moved from Newark to Union and currently occupies over 150 acres in Union and Hillside Townships.

Kean University was granted its university status on September 26, 1997. While maintaining its significant role in the training of teachers, Kean University has become a comprehensive institution offering forty-seven undergraduate and twenty-eight graduate degree programs serving more than 13,000 students. Across four undergraduate colleges and the Nathan Weiss Graduate College, Kean University’s academic programs cover an exceptional range of disciplines.

Kean University is a metropolitan, comprehensive, interactive, teaching university. A campus dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in higher education, Kean University supports a student-centered learning environment that nurtures the development of the whole student for rewarding careers, lifelong learning and fulfilling lives in a global society. It maintains a commitment to excellence and equity in enrolment, instruction and administration.

Kean University is accredited by all major accrediting organizations. And many majors have accreditation in their field.

Among no less than 130 campus activities, there are five theatres on campus and a student-run radio station and a cable TV station. Kean University also has forty-five computer laboratories and thirty physical fitness centres. The annual budget of student governments is more than a million dollars.

Kean University also has a dynamic Department of Nursing, vital with the national nursing shortage. And Kean University training to Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing level prepares nurses practising in today’s environment, challenged with diminished resources, growing complexity in both patient care and the health care system, and increased demands from a diverse public for culturally congruent quality health care for all groups.
