Michigan Teaching Jobs - At the opening of the millennium, a federal study suggested the nation’s schools would need to two million new teachers this decade.
But with cutbacks in state aid, public schools throughout Michigan are laying off teachers, eliminating teacher preparation periods and increasing class sizes. All are efforts to help balance their budgets by trimming the biggest expense: the salary cost of Michigan Teaching Jobs.
Shortages persist in specialized areas, such as teachers for disabled youngsters, math and science teachers and counselors. But it’s tough for most general classroom teachers to find Michigan Teaching Jobs.
The Michigan Education Association, the state’s largest teachers union, said Michigan Teaching Jobs are harder than ever to find as districts cut back. Adding to the job competition is the fact that Michigan’s colleges routinely graduate more new teachers than the state’s K-12 schools can use.
Recently, five of the twenty-eight Oakland County school districts were absent from a Michigan Teaching Jobs fair. "we plan to do virtually no hiring," said Douglas McKnight, assistant superintendent of the Madison school district, one of the five no-shows. "i didn’t think it was right to go out there and take up the applicants’ time."
And besides, the countywide Oakland intermediate district has a huge database of 5,000 teacher applicants that Madison and other districts can dip into at any time, McKnight said. "i could start a traffic jam on John R if I said we’re hiring third-grade teachers," he added.
Several districts now offer early retirement bonuses to persuade veteran teachers to leave early. The districts hope to save money by hiring teachers for less than half the salaries of the veterans. This may create a few new openings.
If you still want to try for rare Michigan Teaching Jobs, several local web-based teacher employment agencies are keen to sign you up.
