Teaching English In China - Hugely populated China has more English speakers than any other country ... but it is still looking for Westerners interested in Teaching English in China as it reaches out from its insular 5,000-year history to the rest of the world.
Teaching English in China takes place in a variety of schools and colleges as well as universities and orphanages, offering the opportunity to gain different types of teaching experience. Growing numbers of Chinese businesses also offer chances for those Teaching English in China.
Knowledge of Chinese is not always required and even formal teaching qualifications are sometimes overlooked or teachers will be accepted with basic qualifications they can acquire on short courses - even online.
Chinese children - and their parents - have a superb work ethic and are extremely attentive and enthusiastic learners. Those Teaching English in China consistently report significant improvements in their pupils’ level of English within the space of a month.
While you are Teaching English in China, you will find it useful to learn at least a little of the local language - usually a very common Mandarin dialect. Your fellow teachers will be very keen to give you a helping hand - every new word and gesture is seen as a small triumph - and probably just cause for another Chinese toast: ’gam-be’ (literally, ’dry the cup’).
The Internet lists several opportunities for Teaching English in China. One is the Colorado China Council on www.asiacouncil.org. Currently, the primary focus of CCC is sending North Americans out Teaching English in China. The Council has placed over 330 teachers, making it one of the US’s largest non-religious providers of teachers to China. But - although costs and pocket money may be provided - the positions are offered on a ’volunteer’ basis.
But Teaching English in China can also be an interestingly paying prospect if you shop around.
