Classroom management: trends in the 21st century

Classroom Management - The fear that kept our grandparents firmly in their place, as switch-wielding school masters paced self-importantly up and down rows of desks in hushed classrooms with all the vitality of well-tended graveyards, is now as much a part of the education scrap heap as the dunce’s cap.

Classroom management has become a key part of every educator’s job with specialised courses, hundreds of books and thousands of Internet websites dedicated to the art of providing an atmosphere in which students of all ages - from kindergarten to university - can learn and flourish.

Careful and skilled classroom management is the 21st century’s answer to the threat and intimidation-induced discipline of bygone years and experts are unanimous in the belief that new approaches produce results - a higher standard of learning and better balanced students who, later, look back on their school years as a constructive and happy time, rather than as a nightmare.

And classroom management techniques are developing by the day as more and more educators hone their art and turn an ear to their students - a far cry from when only a teacher’s voice and opinion carried any weight.

Still too often, however, a teacher’s handling of discipline problems can be an ill-considered reaction to a student’s behavior, with little or no thought to whether his or her own reaction is good for the student, other students, or the general learning situation in the classroom.

There are three variables in every discipline situation: the teacher, the problem student, and the rest of the students in the class. The only variable a teacher can control is himself or herself. If the teacher is out of control, the situation is out of control.

Teachers interested in the latest ideas in classroom management could do worse than surf the web where admirable sites like www.drwilliampmartin.com/classm.html have collected together a wealth of classroom management resources for consultation.
