College of the desert: learning in palm springs

College Of The Desert - Set among the palm trees and magnificent mountainscape of the spectacular Pal Desert, College of the Desert is a fully accredited two-year community college next to the resort town of Palm Springs, California.

Nestled at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains, College of the Desert prepares students for successful transfer to the many public and private universities throughout the United States.

College of the Desert students can choose from over eight-five degree and certificate programs including, Business Administration, Computer Science, Digital Design, Hotel/Restaurant Management, Architecture and many other programs in both the liberal arts and sciences before transferring to many four-year universities throughout the United States to complete their Bachelor’s degree.

In addition to academic programs, College of the Desert’s 10,000 students - half of them Hispanic - can study intensive English at the Intensive English Academy. The IEA offers twenty-five hours a week of instruction in the English language for a period of eight or sixteen weeks. Classes focus on grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and are TOEFL prep based. Classes are offered from the beginning to advanced level.

College of the Desert came into being in 1958 when voters approved formation of a junior college district in the Coachella Valley in a landslide vote. It was the culmination of ten years of study and planning by the governing boards of the Palm Springs and Coachella Valley Unified School Districts and the State Department of Education.College of the Desert was established on April 15 of that year, when the initial five-member Board of Trustees was elected.

On July 1, the members were seated and the new District began to function. College of the Desert got its name from a Palm Springs teenager, Douglas Crocker, who won a "name the College" contest sponsored by the district and local newspapers.
