Illinois Board Of Education - The forward thinking Illinois Board of Education plans to reduce red tape and bureaucracy and streamline procedures for the state’s schools.
At a recent meeting of the Illinois Board of Education (officially known as Illinois State Board of Education), staff outlined plans to scrap unnecessary rules, forms and paperwork for schools.
There are currently nearly 3,000 pages of rules and regulations in place.
Interim Superintendent Randy Dunn and Illinois Board of Education staff members have already begun discussions with educators around the state to get suggestions for improvement. In addition, they have set up an email address, lessredtape@isbe.net, for educators and the public to make suggestions to reduce the regulatory burden of existing Illinois Board of Education rules.
In addition to educator and public input, the review process will include feedback from advisory groups and committees focused on specific areas like student transportation, health and life safety and bilingual education. Where needed, special work groups will be formed for particular issues. Illinois Board of Education staff has already begun to look at regulations related to inactive programs - which represent twenty percent of existing rules.
Governor Blagojevich recently signed the Education Reform and Accountability Act of 2004, shifting the focus of the Illinois Board of Education from just regulating school districts to improving education of students in Illinois and being accountable to the Governor, legislators, school districts, parents, and children.
Illinois Board of Education governs the Ohio Department of Education; it is responsible for recommending budgets to the governor and legislature, it adopts and oversees administrative rules for local school districts, and it licenses teachers and proposes academic standards.
The non-partisan Illinois Board of Education consists of eleven independently elected members representing broad geographic districts and eight gubernatorial appointees. A new two-year budget proposal is to be announced soon.
