University Of Southern Maine - The University of Southern Maine is the largest and most cosmopolitan of the seven campuses of the University of Maine System, as well as one of the oldest, with its founding in Gorham in 1878.
A major educational force in the overall growth and improvement of the economic, civic, social, and cultural fabric of southern Maine, the University of Southern Maine has. campuses in Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston, and offers baccalaureate, master’s, and Ph.D. degree programs, providing students with opportunities in the arts, humanities, politics, health sciences, business, mass communications, science, engineering, and technology.
Academic programs at the University of Southern Maine include forty-seven baccalaureate degrees, twenty-six graduate degrees, one Ph.D. program and one juris doctor.
The Univsersity of Southern Maine - which with 11.500 students enrolls more than any other institution in the state - is comprised of eight academic units: College of Arts and Sciences, School of Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology, School of Business, College of Education and Human Development, College of Nursing and Health Professionals, Lewsiston-Auburn College, Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Service, and University of Maine School of Law.
The 108-acre residential campus of Gorham and urban 27.5-acre campus of Portland are eight miles apart and located less than two hours from Boston. The Lewiston-Auburn campus of 8.3 acres, located in Lewiston, is thirty-five miles north of Portland.
Seventy-five percent of University of Southern Maine students - average age just over twenty-eight - are undergraduates, the rest graduate law students. More than sixty percent of the enrollment is female. Only 700 students are from out of state and ninety others come from thirty countries around the world.
The University of Southern Maine is one of largest employers in the state with 1,574 employees: 404 faculty, 669 professional staff, and 501 classified staff.
