Georgia State University - Georgia State University, at the heart of downtown Atlanta, is one of the country’s leading urban research universities with enrollment at an all-time high at its six schools and colleges.
The current student body is the best qualified and most diverse in Georgia State University’s history. Students come to the campus from every county in Georgia, every state in the nation and more than 145 countries worldwide. There are nearly 150,000 alumni.
Offering a challenging intellectual environment with fifty-two undergraduate and graduate degree programs in more than 250 fields of study, there are also opportunities for involvement in innovative research projects and life enhancing community.
In 1997, Georgia State University began preparing a blueprint for growth over the coming decade. With the help of Sizemore Floyd Architects, the university conducted interviews with faculty, staff, students and downtown neighbors to develop a campus master plan that supports the university’s aspiration to be the nation’s leading urban research university.
To achieve that goal, Georgia State University is transforming its campus into an academic "main Street" that’s connected with the city.
The Main Street Master Plan’s cornerstone rests on transforming Decatur Street into the "main Street" of Georgia State University’s campus. This pedestrian corridor will give the university a campus environment that’s a part of the city - not apart from it. The Main Street Master Plan calls for redesigning the street, traffic patterns, sidewalks, street-front buildings and gathering spots - all to create a pedestrian corridor that’s easily identified as Georgia State University.
It focuses on creating a vibrant, inviting campus where Georgia State University students can learn, live and work. Visible signs of the plan’s success include the Rialto Theater, Student Center, Recreation Center, Helen M. Aderhold Learning Center and University Lofts. And much more is planned to turn Georgia State University into a local village in its own right.
