Mississippi Department Of Education - When the Mississippi Department of Education was awarded a PT3 Catalyst Grant to help Mississippi’s teacher education programs better integrate technology, its first challenge was to build bridges among the institutions of higher learning.
According to Helen Soulé, Mississippi Department of Education’s former PT3 project director, building bridges and transforming the traditional relationship between the state and the university communities has been an evolutionary and challenging process, but a valuable one.
Another challenge existed for Mississippi’s Department of Education with the state’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). A 1998 study found that first-year teachers from Mississippi’s HBCUs were less confident about integrating technology than their counterparts from the non-HBCU schools. Correcting this imbalance is a major focus of the Mississippi Department of Education.
The Mississippi Department of Education is reaching out to exemplary teachers, preservice students and college faculty through what it calls MS Triad to provide technology-rich on-site field experiences.
As the liaison between the members of the MS Triad, the state encourages communication through two face-to-face activities each year - a summer retreat and a winter convocation.
The Mississippi Department of Education’s MS Triad team uses a problem-based approach to training. Faculty attending the summer and winter retreats, will create a manual for use in their classrooms in the hope that the experience will take the edge off skepticism about using high technology and intergrating it into every day classroom life.
Mississippi Department of Education project leaders hope that the bonds it is building among members of the MS Triad will continue long after the PT3 grant is over. The project is working to strengthen those bonds by expanding its online educational technology portal, www.MS.Triad.Net. The new portal will include online training and other features designed to build and sustain the grant’s mentoring and collaboration relationships.
