Boise State University - Boise State University is a metropolitan university reflecting the characteristics of Idaho’s state capital city – a centre of business, government, finance and technology – and serving the academic needs of the state through graduate and undergraduate programs, research and public service.
And now Boise State University is set to make a difference to the whole world through the creation of an Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Aging as part of the 2005 White House Conference on Aging.
The center will be under the direction of Boise State University’s College of Health Sciences and the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs. University officials said that both colleges will provide education and training to the community and serve as a resource for faculty and students conducting research on aging.
Brenda Shapy, director of the Blaine County Senior Center said seniors should have more options at senior care facilities instead of the typical activities of bingo, cards and quilting. Shapy said there needs to be a change in the way of thinking and complete revision in identifying the role of senior centers.
Experts agree that the future "baby Boomer" senior must be independent and kept out of nursing homes as well as feel useful and needed.
Boise State University officials say that initial funding for the center comes from a $245,000 grant from the Administration on Aging in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Some of the new center’s goals will be to involve retired seniors, Boise State University students, faculty and staff as well as those from the fields of nursing, economics, social work, criminal justice, and health.
The Boise State University center aims to develop a graduate certificate in gerontological studies and provide non-credit education and training to rural and urban care-givers and service providers in health and policy areas related to aging.
