College Fight Songs - “ravens are flying high in the sky -- cheer them on their way! Sons of grand old Saint Benedict -- waive your banners high! Fighting onto glory! Faithful to the story! Victory always!”
While the paragraph that begins this article sets out the simple yet tradition bound lyrics to a college fight song from a small institution in the Midwestern United States, the college fight song itself is typical of what is found in college fight songs everywhere.
In preparing this article, we came to conclude that college fight songs really have three things in common, no matter to what school the song is attached.
First, nearly every fight song has a militaristic sounding tune. If a person did not know that a given tune was in fact a college fight song, that person might conclude that the song was some sort of militaristic marching tune.
Secondly, and most obvious, all college fight songs live up to their names. They truly are fight songs. All college fight songs contain lyrics calling for victory on the athletic field. “fight, fight, fight!” “win, win, win!” Fighting and winning truly are the foundations of all college fight songs.
Finally, the vast majority of college fight songs appeal to the school’s history and long held traditions. Some times the college fight songs tie themselves tightly with a school mascot that is somehow deeply linked with the school’s history.
For example, in the song that began this article, a raven is referenced in regard to a college named after Saint Benedict. Tradition has it that a raven swooped down on Saint Benedict himself when he was about to eat a piece of intentionally poisoned bread. The raven snatched the poisoned loaf out of the man’s hands, saving his live.
Tradition and school spirit combine to create lively and rousing ditties that bring the student body together in celebration of their alma mater.
