Woodlands High School - The Woodlands High School is a vital part of The Woodlands, a master-planned new community of 68,000 set among 27,000 acres of lush Texas forest.
It uses a system of ’accelerated block scheduling’ with only two terms of eighteen weeks each. There are two nine-week semesters in each Woodlands High School term with four ninety-minute periods in each day.
The beautifully appointed campus in its landscaped surroundings states "a tradition of excellence" as The Woodlands High School motto
But after the state’s school accountability ratings were released recently by the Texas Education Agency, The Woodlands High School, which had received an "academically exemplary" rating since the 1997-98 school year, dropped to "academically recognized," causing commotion in the area.
However, The Woodlands High School still scored highly. The requirements to maintain an "exemplary" rating were to have a 90 percent passing rate for all subjects of the TAKS tests, including the sub-groups of white, African American, Hispanic and economically challenged, as well as a 95-percent rate of students completing high school, all of which The Woodlands High managed.
As a result of the new rating not living up to The Woodlands High School motto, local education officials are appealing to the Commissioner of Education for an upgrade. If the nearby campus of McCullough School and its sister Woodlands High School campus were paired, they would maintain the exemplary rating. This, therefore, would allow
In addition to a shared school motto, the mission statement for both the McCullough campus and its senior Woodlands High School campus are the same, serving as one school "dedicated to providing a safe environment offering a challenging program, promoting high expectations, recognizing student learning and development through a variety of resources, and preparing students to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens."
