Alabama State University - Alabama State University has an interesting and important history that ties in well with a lot of the history of the area. In fact, this university is one of the oldest colleges that was founded by African-Americans. The school was originally called the Lincoln Normal School, and was founded in the late 1860’s during the Reconstruction Period in the Deep South to make a school for African-American people to send their children to in order to get a good education. A big part of this was due to the realization that the best way to get ahead in an already unbalanced system would be to make sure that children got the best educations that they could.
While Alabama State University went through some rough times during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 1960’s, it has overall grown from its first beginnings to still be a major university in Alabama that is devoted to teaching students what they need to know in order to get their degrees and eventually a better job or career than they would be able to get otherwise.
Alabama State originally started out as a black university, however, since segregation ended, it has opened up to all students. The most important issues regarding admissions are not based on race, but are instead based on whether or not the students are capable of doing the coursework necessary to earn a degree at this college.
Like most universities, Alabama State University is primarily a liberal arts college. As a result, this is a great place to go if you’re looking to get a liberal arts education and you don’t want to go out of the state of Alabama to do so. In fact, if you do live in Alabama, staying in state and going to Alabama State is an option that you should definitely consider, since in-state tuition costs will be lower than out-of-state costs, no matter where you enroll.
As far as athletics, you have the same sports to look forward to at Alabama State University as you would expect if you attended almost any other school. You can also expect an even number of sports both for women and men. If you’re interested in tennis, bowling, basketball, baseball, football, or any number of other sports, don’t worry. You’ll be able to play or watch your favorite sports and root for your team if you end up enrolling in ASU.
