Special Education Lesson Plans - One of the most difficult parts of teaching special education children is having a decent special education lesson plan. This is due to the fact that a lot of children are put into special education programs for varying reasons, therefore, not all lesson plans will work for all of the children. Hopefully, if you’re teaching special education, you will have a smaller number of children to work with, since teaching it requires a lot of extra one-on-one time with the students.
The first thing you should consider about every special education lesson plan is that you need to make sure that your plan is geared toward your students in particular. For this reason, while it’s helpful to find ideas about lesson plans from other teachers, chances are good that you’re going to need to change those plans to better fit your own class room.
For example, if your special education class is blind, it’s pretty obvious that you’re going to need to spend time working on Braille and other topics. One topic that you can also include in your lesson plan involves coping in the rest of the world. You can teach children more about what they need to do to get around in the real world, and different techniques that they can use to make sure that they don’t get lost. However, Braille will always be the most important tool for blind people, since not even picture menus are helpful.
An important thing to keep in mind when you’re working on your special education lesson plans is that special education children are just like all other children in that they are more likely to pay attention and be interested in what you are teaching if you use a subject that they enjoy. Therefore, it might be a good idea to ask the students you’re going to be teaching what they like to read or hear about. That way, you can gear your lesson plan toward that theme and make learning more fun for your students.
