Musician and home-tape veteran Hessel Veldman, known from the legendary Gorgonzola Legs, F.N.T.C. and the Exart label ( IJmuiden, Holland 1982 – 1995), finally returns back to earth with the resurrection of his solo-project Y CREATE: a full-length CD (76:54) with new dark earplays, now for the first time available! 
All material on ‘ Madadayo’ was processed with original sounds from the rich Exart-archives.

Entendu sur la compilation The walls are whispering vol. 2 publiée par le même label. Y Create mérite cette écoute prolongée. Déroulement réfléchi, la construction de Madadayo diffuse les densités, les luminosités, les expressions. Hessel Veldman alias Y Create a réalisé les enregistrements de l'album entre 1979 et 2002, autant dire qu'ils peuvent être dissemblables et difficilement organisables. Pourtant, ignorant sans doute la chronologie, il a choisi la succession évoquée. Des premiers instants, on comprend le goût de la texture, et des mirages qu'elle cache ou qu'elle fait naître. Musique ambiance active, où le drone et la nappe fragile s'effilochent, elle dévoile peu à peu ses échos mélodiques, nés de la matière ou de violons lointains. Les minutes passent, déroulement et dissipent le brouillard, laissant apparaître les reliefs qui s'imposaient, jusqu'à des constructions rythmiques ciselées, puis un calme nouveau. C'est bien d'une manière d'ascension qu'il s'agit, et de la descente qui s'ensuit. Du fond d'un plancher océanique, les premières boucles montent, éclosent, emmènent leur timbre mat, assourdi par la pression de l'eau. les plaintes de cordes s'épanouissent avec les premières caresses d'une lumière qui perce les flots. Toujours plus haut, les drones et les nappes ondulent, se figent, se critallissent et se creusent avec les discrètes percussions métalliques, des tintements et des frappes sourdes. Avec les reliefs, la marée abandonne son lot de vapeurs, ses chants de mélodie perdue, ses spectres de mélancolie, ses hommages aux vagues disparues, aux nautoniers oubliés. Le flux protomélodique, ainsi minéralisé, se sordifie et se bosselle, épousant les escarpements d'une musique rituelle qui semble devoir beaucoup à Zoviet*France et aux plus sobres exercises de Hybryds. Au sommet, les ondulations synthétiques ne se cachent plus, pontuées de crêtes électro minimales. Transe des échos, circonvolutions autour d'une crime enneigée, les images s'imposent et restent, jusqu'à s'éreinter d'elles-mêmes, s'évanouir peu à peu vers la vallée, un cirque calme, profondément veiné par les rocs que les langues glaciaires ont roulés, souvenirs pénétrants d'une mélodie pulsative.

Madadayo ist eine Anthologie des Schaffens des uns bisher unbekannten niederländischen Projekts Y Create. Es dominieren schöne analoge Rhythmen und verrauschte Flächen - ein wenig wie das Frühwerk des Vidna Obmana.

2005 - Zipo (Auf Abwegen)

Tapes mogen dan wel tot het verleden behoren, maar EE draagt ze nog steeds trots in naam en hart. De oude kameraden van de hometape scène krijgen regelmatig asiel op de verzamelaars en tot onze vreugde wordt het obscure Y Create (bouwjaar 1979) opnieuw tot leven gewekt middels een gelimiteerde (300 stuks) cd in 7inch verpakking.! Hessel Veldman (ooit tapelabel Exart) brengt kwalitatieve en rustige rituele muziek. Zachte dreunen worden vermengd met ijle melodieuze bodembedekkers, echte instrumenten, gemanipuleerde concrete geluiden en trage percussie. Er is niets nieuws onder de zon, maar ‘Madadayo’ kan probleemloos concurreren met de gelijksoortige hippe projecten van de derde generatie. Y Create is (te) lang een (te) goed bewaard geheim gebleven van een (te) kleine scène. Hierin verandering brengen is warm aanbevolen.

2006 - P. Vercauteren (Gonzo Circus)

Knowing absolutely nothing of this artist, after undertaking a little background research it seems that solo musician Hessel Veldman ran a tape label Exart from 1982 to 1995. Thus with a wealth of archival material to draw from, Hessel sampled, collated, arranged and mixed sounds to construct the final compositions on this album.
Whist the promo blurb might bill this as dark ambient, to my mind this description is far too narrow to adequately capture the diversity of ideas at play. Admittedly the opening track ‘The white house walk’ might subscribe to a standard dark ambient sound, yet, things really take flight on ‘A tale from the dark side’ with a rhythmic tribal composition. The moody synth melodies of the title track avoid clichés given the underscoring trip hop beats introduced mid way through. ‘Daisy daisy’ likewise is truly wondrous, forging a halcyon sonic miasma, and yet another example of this CD being well above beyond a mere dark ambient tag.
Without resorting to describing each individual track and its particular elements and sounds, Y Create’s album is truly one of the most diverse, professional, interesting and welcomed surprises I have come across in recent times. Lastly, the CD comes housed is a 7” record sleeve & is limited to 325 copies.

2005 - RJS (Aural Pressure)

Mogelijks roept Y Create – knap gevonden naam overigens – niet veel bij u op. Nochtans hebben we hier niet te doen met een beginneling. Hessel Veldman, het creatieve brein van Y Create, stichtte reeds eind jaren ’70 het tape-label Exart, en mag dus bijgevolg beschouwd worden als één van de pioniers van de Nederlandse electronica-scène. Voor “Madadayo” selecteerde EEtapes 75 minuten uit vele uren opnamemateriaal, en als het overige materiaal van dezelfde strekking is als hetgeen we op dit album te horen krijgen, dan mag er wat ons betreft gerust nog één of meerdere vervolgen aan gebreid worden. Tijdens de opnameperiode van het materiaal overleden zowel de ouders als de dochter van Hessel Veldman. Het hoeft dan ook niet te verwonderen dat de rustige ambient van Y Create eerder weemoedig en melancholisch klinkt. Vooral “Funeral music” weet met een slepende structuur de tragiek van de rouw ontzettend goed in muziek te vatten. Melancholie kan ook weergegeven worden met kalm voortkabbelende beats, zoals het project dat doet in “Tale from the dark side” en vooral in de titeltrack “Madadayo”. De naar trip-hop neigende kadans en de treurige, ijle melodie van deze track maken het tot onze favoriet. Daarmee wensen we geen afbreuk te doen aan de overige zeven tracks. Allen hebben ze ondanks het feit dat ze lang uitgesponnen zijn een aangename interne dynamiek en weten ze door de verfijnde opbouw de aandacht vast te houden. Naar gewoonte bij EEtapes werd ook deze CD verpakt in een 7” cover, en gelimiteerd op 300 exemplaren. Conclusie: niet aarzelen!

So you probably ask: Y Create? I didn't ask this question, as I knew Y Create was the solo project by one Hessel Veldman, from IJmuiden, The Netherlands. In the days when I was a little boy, he was the main man for experimental and electronic in The Netherlands and he ran Exart Tapes, worked with Willem de Ridder in FNTC (with a release on Staalplaat) and contributed a track to the very first cassette I released (also as Y Create, but with Gert-Jan Prins on percussion. With Prins he also was in a band called Gorgonzola Legs. Somewhere in the earlyb nineties I lost contact with him and he went on to do other things. But he's back, with Y Create and his old passion for radio plays. The recordings on 'Madadayo' were recorded between 1979 and 2002 and remixed in 2002-2003 for this release. Y Create uses the full eighty minutes a CD can offer to play his music, but with only eight tracks, you can imagine they are lenghty affairs. Y Create's pieces usually start out with a piece of drones, with lots of small variations in the EQ-ing, and percussion comes in. The percussive bits move around constantly in the background, being fed through an enormous amount of delay and reverb lines and in some case even develop into a banging rhythm with hints of techno. All of these eight pieces have a great ambient feel to them, but Y Create is pushing the boundaries a little bit more and things are just a bit more adventurous here. Great come-back album.
