Academy 1/72 P-40E 'Aleutian tiger'

Here are some in progress pics, previous page: buildup pics

needs upper fuselage olive drab painted next, underside gray and yellow on some parts already painted (update from 2004)

I put another (lighter) coat of gray on the underside to get some variation (preshading/postshading) in colour, but it's hard to see in this pic yet.

Masking the clear parts, not easy but I used some of the Eduard mask as template and copied them onto Tamiya tape (the Eduard masks are useless, they don't stick)

(update october 26th, '05)

Small parts have been painted and put aside, clear parts were painted together with upper fuselage

Upper fuselage painted with olive drab and a second coat with some white added to get a worn look

removing masking tape had caused unwanted paint chipping, I fixed that by using metal paint on those spots and on other area's to simulate wear and voilą... problem solved

Now ready for decalling (update april 28th, '05)

Future gloss coat next and then decalling started, using lots of Microset/sol, the noseart is a nightmare to get flush to fuselage.

Kits' decals were used, they respond well to Microset/sol but tend to silver a bit (update april 29th, '05)

Decals done after loads of decal solvent for the noseart and then a few touchups with yellow, red, white and black acrylics to make a perfect overlap, two layers of future to seal them,

weathering will be next (update may 3th, '05)

a mix of oil paints thinned down with turpentine serves as a wash for panel lines, apply with a brush, let dry for a few minutes and wipe off with household paper from nose to tail, experiment to get a clean or dirty look as you like best. Wartime pics show rather dirty planes with exhaust and cannon stains, weared down paint and metal spots.

(update may 4th, '05)

Rest of the weathering was done with oil paints and some drybrushing with enamels, final touches are the antennae made from stretched sprue, exhaust and cannon stains, then dull coat and painting navigation lights, adding the clear parts last.
