Air direction

The direction of the air you blow onto your flute is determined by the position and the form of the lips.

  1. Your lips should be positioned vertically on top of each other, in such manner that when you blow some air through them, it will be directed horizontally away from you.
  2. Don't use your cheek muscles, those that make you smile, to keep the air hole small. Instead rely on a vertical pressure keeping your lips together.
  3. Don't use lip pressure instead of breath support to tackle your notes. You ONLY use your lips to guide the outcoming air onto the tone hole. The air itself is thrusted by breath support !

Your lips make a certain shape between them where through air flows. Depending on the played register. You should inspect the shape of your lip-hole, and also the direction your air takes when blowing.

Your flute has three registers :

Studying harmonics can enhance your tone too.
