Reference projects

Storage Area Networking

(2006 – 2007) Implement EMC SAN, using Clariion arrays and Cisco or Brocade/McData FC switches, and NAS, based on Celerra file servers, for small and large customers, sometimes including Vmware ESX virtualization platform, Symantec Enterprise Vault and backup software, data replication (over IP or FC) and disaster recovery.

(2006 – 2007) Assess customer’s server and storage environments for consolidation, optimization (tiering) and for disaster recovery. Establish a formal methodology for this assessment, including forms and calculations.

Storage Area Networking

(2004) Assist with redesign and upgrade of a storage area network to latest EMC technology, including DMX cabinets, 2Gbps McData switches and SRDF. The SAN, which spanned two sites, had to be highly available and disaster recoverable and supports business critical applications on different platforms (Solaris cluster, HPUX ServiceGuard cluster, MSCS and Geospan clusters).
Activities included:

Document and test migration procedure for minimum downtime.

Installing, upgrading and configuring host bus adapters and fibre switches.

Fibre patching.

Logical volume reconfiguration on HPUX and Solaris clusters.

Storage Area Networking

(2004) With the help of EMC consultants, design a data classification model to align enterprise applications on the right storage layer.

IP Services

(2007-2008): Design, consolidate and migrate IP addressing and naming for the different operational companies from an international bank to a uniform platform consisting of VitalQIP6.2 software on Infoblox appliances, using Anycast addressing. Includes automation scripts, operator trainings, joint designs for Windows 2008 and networking.

(2001) Design, implementation and training on WINS, Windows 2000 DNS and DHCP for Belgian bank. Facing a merged environment with many different organizations, this bank wanted as a first step to offer uniform corporate wide intranet browsing and secondly, prepare its IP services for a corporate wide directory system. This project started with assigning responsible parties, defining central naming policies and making an inventory of all the organizations, their naming and addressing schemes (DNS, WINS, static hosts files, DHCP), their Internet access methods (proxy, default gateway, …). The second step involved defining firewall access-lists, setting up a central naming registration authority and integrating the new and existing naming servers into the central internal root hierarchy. After a pilot phase and some workshops for the network operators, the phased production rollout was accomplished.

(2002) Workshops QIP 5.2 for a Saudi telecom corporation. This customer needed two 7-day courses covering basic and advanced DNS (Bind and Windows 2000) and DHCP and Lucent QIP administration.

(2000) Design, implementation and workshops on Lucent QIP 5.0 at a Belgian bank.
To consolidate it’s different naming and addressing policies for it’s corporate network (national and international) as well as to be ready for new technologies like dynamic DNS and Active Directory, this bank opted for Lucent’s DNS/DHCP and IP management software.
This project included extensive CGI scripting using Perl, writing SQL queries for Oracle, Oracle tuning, testing different versions of Bind and DHCP, network sniffing and acting as a support liaison between the customer and Lucent. Detailed phased migrations scenarios were designed and tested for the national and international rollout.

Network Management

Network management being my main specialization in my previous function, I setup many network management systems in the last 4 years for several industry, banking and government customers. My typical network management project starts in the presales phase with NMS architecture design (central, distributed or remote), server sizing, software product choice (mostly from the Openview and/or CiscoWorks suite) to match customer’s size, device types and requirements. During the implementation I install, configure and harden the O.S. (Solaris or Windows 2000). After installation, an initial network discovery is done and basic event correlation and filtering is configured. The different modules are customized and integrated. For instance: CiscoWorks, MRTG and Network Node Manager can be served from the same web portal. Or, NNM can be integrated with an existing asset database.
When necessary, problems are escalated to HP or Cisco.
One-day workshops for network operators are often included in my projects.
Upgrading and patching are part of maintenance.

Design and setup VPN network and monitoring station for a European council (2001 - 2002). This VPN network covers 15 countries and is being monitored 24x7. The VPN’s were setup with Thales crypto boxes using PKI. The monitoring station is a SUN running Openview Network Node Manager. Security constraints for the network as well as the monitoring station were very restrictive.

OSS systems for a Saudi telecom network operations centre (NOC) (2002).
As part of a take-over of the NOC from another team, I was responsible for assessing and redesigning the existing tools (HP Openview Network Node Manager, Netmetrix, Lucent QIP, CiscoWorks 2000, Concord eHealth)
