Hardcore more than just music

These words have been said a million times… and they’re so right. The Ieper Hardcore festival wants to prove that this saying still stands in these modern times. The best way to do this is by organising a series of non-musical activities besides the musical performances. We believe that animal, earth and human liberation will only come through education (indeed, we’re still listening to the almightyCHOKEHOLD). So we tried, and succeeded if I may say so, to make this part of the fest special and interesting for as many people as possible. And that’s why all of the activities mentioned below are free for everyone, visitor of the fest or not. Everyone can get in for free at the huge, brand new Fenix venue next to the festival ground. So you see, there is no reason to miss out on this people …

This is what we had in mind at the moment this booklet was made. Any changes will be mentioned on the official festival message board somewhere on the festival site. Go and check it from time to time, please!

  • Global Veggie War’N’ing

Speakers, movies & interactive discussions concerning our 'footprint' on this world by our (well thought-over) eating habits and what the hell has "vegetarianism/veganism" to do with this all ?

Sat 25th @ 15.00 / The film “We feed the world” (Wagenhofer)
    by Thierry Kesteloot (Oxfam)

Thierry Kesteloot, active at Oxfam, comes to introduce you all to the film “We Feed The World”. The film provides insight into the production of our food and answers the question what world hunger has to do with us. Why doesn't a tomato taste like a tomato today? How does one explain that 200 million people in India, supplier of 80% of Switzerland's wheat, suffer from malnutrition? Why are thousands of acres of the Amazon being cleared to grow soybeans? Is water something to which the public has a basic right or, as the CEO of the world's largest food company Nestlé suggests, a foodstuff with a market value? These distressing questions are mapped out as filmmaker Wagenhofer charts a course of contention from Austria to Brazil, France to Africa. Interviewed are not only UN's Jean Ziegler, and CEO's and directors of the world's largest food companies, but also agronomists, biologists, fishermen, farmers and farm workers. This film is about food and globalization, it is about the flow of goods and cash flow - a film about scarcity amidst plenty. Meanwhile, on a daily basis in Vienna alone, left-over bread, enough to supply a small city is destroyed. The planet has enough production power to feed everyone, but 800 million people suffer from hunger.

After seeing this movie, we had some questions ourselves. Thierry Kesteloot will try to give an answer to some of them or maybe you can even answer that question asked by the person who was sitting next to you during the film … You know what I’m trying to say: this film will arouse a discussion and we want you all to be a part of it!

Film in German & English with Dutch & French subtitles. Introduced in English or Dutch (depends on the audience).

Sat 25th @ 18.00 / Vegetarianism and the ecological impact of it
    by Stijn Scholts (Bite Back)

Stijn Scholts is very active in the Belgian animal rights organisation Bite Back and is very pleased with the opportunity to come and tell us more about what the ecological impact is of us, being vegetarian/vegan or just thinking to become one. He will also be paying attention to what’s so important to choose to start living a meatless life. Even if you have been a veggie for more than a decade, you’re still welcome to listen to Stijn and watch what he has to show us about this matter. I’m pretty sure we can all learn from him.

Stijn will speak the English and Dutch language but that all depends on the audience present.

  • No war... a 'peace' of cake ?

Ninety years ago this area was the scenery of one of the most ferocious conflicts on earth during World War I. "No more war" became the most cheered catch-cry. But how is the situation today and above all: what can we do? Some local organisations come to explain what their goal is regarding this subject. Come, listen & speak your mind: your opinion is considered !

Sun 26th @ 14.00 / Bomspotting: Getting rid of nuclear weapons

US nuclear weapons have been deployed at Kleine Brogel (B) since November 1963. These nuclear weapons are under control of the US 701 MUNSS (Munition Support Squadron). But it will be Belgian pilots with Belgian F16-planes who will use these nuclear weapons of mass destruction in war time.

The nuclear weapons are stored in 11 underground WS3-bunkers (Weapons Storage & Security System). These bunkers are situated under the hardened aircraft shelters. They are in use since 1993. Each WS3-bunker can contain 4 nuclear weapons. Following a Presidential Directive from Bill Clinton 20 nuclear weapons from the type B61, model 3, 4 or 10 were stored in Kleine Brogel The B61 is a modern nuclear airplane bomb with different explosion levels between 0.3 and 170 kiloton. The maximum yield of the B61 is 14 times the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

The objective of BombSpotting is well known: the disposal of the American nuclear weapons from Europe and the denuclearisation of the NATO. They try to reach their aim by non-violent activities only. BombSpotting participants resolutely enter the military basis where the nuclear weapons are present, but are not using any physical violence whatsoever. There is a good chance that the nuclear weapons will be withdrawn from Kleine Brogel. As a movement against nuclear weapons BombSpotting should be happy for this, however their objective hasn’t been reached yet. And that’s why we invited them to come and talk about their activities. And they will do it in English, lucky you!

    Sun 26th @ 15.30 / VRAK - AKtie VRedesbelasting (Peace Tax Action)
    by Jan Hellebaut

VRAK devotes itself to the right to consciously object against joining in paying for military defence. They want nobody to be forced to pay for military defence by his/her tax money. They want this money to be deposited in a ‘peace fund’ which will invest in the peaceful solution of conflicts and initiatives for peace, such as: a) the study of non-military maintaining and non-violent conflict solution; b) the education of the population in non-violent resistance and the safeguarding of the democratic values; c) the establishment of conciliation groups for non-military conflict solution in Belgium and in conflict areas in the world; d) the promotion of human rights and democratic freedoms; e) the promotion of disarmament; f) the study concerning the reorientation of the weapon industry. It can be expected that this ‘peace fund’ will adopt such a scope that it will provide a considerable contribution for more peace in the world!

If you really want to know how you can refuse a symbolic amount in taxes as a protest against the fact that you’re joining in paying for the military? Come and listen to VRAK! We apologise to everyone who doesn’t understand Dutch, but this will only be in Dutch because it is mainly a Flemish organisation. But they are linked to international organisations with the same goals. Go and look them up …

Sun 26th @ 17.00 / Mayors for peace & Ieper, City of Peace
    by Filip Deheegher

To prevent any repetition of the A-bomb tragedy, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have continually sought to tell the world about the inhumane cruelty of nuclear weapons and are consistently urging for nuclear weapons to be abolished. On June 24, 1982, at the 2nd UN Special Session on Disarmament held at UN Headquarters in New York, Mayor Takeshi Araki of Hiroshima proposed a new Program to Promote the Solidarity of Cities towards the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons. This proposal offered cities a way to transcend national borders and work together to press for nuclear abolition. Subsequently, the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki called on mayors around the world to support this program. The Mayors for Peace project is composed of cities around the world that have formally expressed support for the program Mayor Araki announced in 1982. As of July 30, 2007, membership stood at 1,698 cities in 122 countries and regions.

The city of Ieper, a symbol of the first World War, wants to boost its global reputation of City of Peace ‘Vredesstad’. In March 2007 the local municipal council decided to offer an office to the international peace organisation Mayors for Peace in its city. The chairmanship stays in the Japanese Hiroshima, but the international secretary moved to Ieper.

If you want to know why Ieper, known by you because of the hardcore festival, became the City Of Peace or if you want to know how your city/village can become a member of Mayors for Peace … than there is only one thing you can do: be there, use your ears and take action.

This one will be in English.

NON GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATIONS

If there is one thing that should be present on a hardcore festival with strong ethical foundations it is socially/ethically/ecologically engaged non-profit organisations. Therefore, we have invited some of those organisations that work to make this world a better place for humans and animals. Be sure to check them out!

Here you got a list of the NGO’s that you can find on the fest in one way or another:

Oxfam-Wereldwilnkels

At the current market price, farmers selling their coffee, cacao and sugar do not get sufficient income. Oxfam Fairtrade is fighting against this unfair situation. Oxfam Fairtrade is a wholesaler in fair trade food products. The non-profit organisation Oxfam-Wereldwinkels is the majority shareholder in the cooperative organisation Oxfam Fairtrade.

Bite Back

Bite back is an animal rights organisation in Belgium and the Netherlands conducting campaign for the rights, the needs, the well-being and the vital interests of/in animals, and this by means of non-violent action. The vzw Bite back assumes the principle that animals have a value in itself, irrespective of the possible usefulness for people. Animals are living beings, be able experience pain, fear and stress, just like people are or able to. Because the animals can’t rise for themselves, animal right organisation Bite back considers himself as a lawsuit deliveryman of their rights. By means of direct action vzw Bite back commits itself for the recognition and the respect for animal rights, for the right of animals to highest quality of life conform with their natural needs and their right of life which remains protected of human exploitation and oppression. Bite back will make a contribution to a society in which realisation consumes and living animals particularly more consciously can save or quality can improve of it. Vzw Bite back wants to prevent through their activities that animals, if weal-sensitive beings, locked up and become exploitive for ` amusement (like in zoo’s or in circuses), which they suffer and to be killed for scientific experimentings, feeding, clothing, sport, tradition or hunting. Bite back vzw was set up in November 2003 as a volunteer organisation.

EVA

By the time EVA was born, the idea of founding an organisation for vegetarianism had been growing among a handful of vegetarians for quite some time. Maybe it all started when a couple of our founding members took their first bite out of a veggie burger? Of maybe it all goes back to some prior life experience, at a time when some of us were cows... We'll probably never know. Anyway, as soon as some of our current board members took control of the official students' organisation advocating vegetarianism at the University of Ghent (Belgium), and managed to have a first edition of our 'Vegetarian Guide' printed using university subsidies, the ambition to do a better job ran high. After a while, we no longer wanted to restrict our target audience to just students, but intended to reach everyone in need of Information. And that's how the idea of founding a non-profit organisation came into being. The plan first had to mature in our brooding minds, and was finally realised, after a lot of brainstorming about the name, on July 13, 2000 - the day EVA was born. Seven people (now twelve) got on the administrative board and split up tasks, including the positions of chairman, webmaster, treasurer and scientific advisor. Each one of us had for a long time shown a passionate interest in vegetarianism, and at least one of us is suspected of having been a pig in a previous life. On September 1st 2000 EVA officially took over the former Vegetarian Union of Belgium ("Vegetariërsvereniging vzw"), which had been promoting a vegetarian way of life throughout Flanders for more than twenty years. This honourable organisation merged with our structures, providing an essential support to our young organisation and adding to our further growth. After our press conference in December 2000 announcing the birth of EVA and the launch of our 'Vegetarian Guide' it became clear to us that the interest in and need for thorough information about vegetarianism were even higher than we had anticipated. In the meantime we've build up a respectable collection of members, and requests for information keep flowing in through regular mail or phone, while our mailbox is constantly stacked...

Anti Dierproeven Coalitie

The Anti animal tests coalition agitate weekly at companies and institutions which make themselves guilty to animal suffering. We do this peacefully but floated using posters, banners, drums, buglets and loud-hailers. Companies which commission for animal tests, institutions which cooperate with animal test-laboratories... can expect us at their door to face them with the horror of animal tests where they’re responsible for. Moreover we inform each weekend the public concerning the horror of animal tests. We do this with information cogs in several cities where we talk with the people on the street and offer them the possibility to sign a petition. The positive responses we get constant are amazing! We are a volunteer organisation which exists in Belgian and Dutch activists, young and old, who no longer want continue stand to the line whereas daily thousands of animals are tortured in tests animal laboratories.

Peta2

The cats and dogs, bunnies and birds, and other furry friends who share our homes and lives give us so much and ask so little in return. Yet, many companion animals have never known a warm place to lay their heads, a nutritious meal, or even a kind human touch. That’s why PETA is dedicated to making a difference for needy animals in our own community and around the world.

peta2 concentrate on three levels. The fieldworkers hit the streets to help animals in need. PETA’s cruelty caseworkers work to bring justice to animals and prevent future cases of abuse by writing letters to prosecutors and judges, urging them to vigorously prosecute and issue strict sentences for alleged and convicted animal abusers, offering rewards for information in cruelty cases,...Peta 2 al also help other people to be angels for animals by giving information how they need to take action for animals.
