WHEN?28,29 and 30 August 2009
WHERE?Open air at the crossroads of Poperingseweg & Hazewindestraat, Ieper, Belgium
WHAT?Welcome! to the 17th edition of Ieperfest. Ieperfest is an independent 3-day Hardcore festival taking place in the Flemish city Ieper. Not only is it the longest running European outdoor underground festival, but it is also an established name across the world. The festival offers a stage to an international variety of underground groups, without the help of major budgets or sponsors. This helps us safeguard our true D.I.Y spirit, and allows us to attract a wide variety of bands, concentrating on what keeps us together rather than what separates us. This year, the variety of bands is even wider… Just like on last year's edition, we will have two stages! Over the next three days, you’ll be able to check out and support 61 bands, divided between our regular Outdoor stage, and our indoor Marquee stage!
Ieperfest is organised by 2 Belgian, not-for-profit D.I.Y. collectives sharing the same geographical & ideological roots: Republyk Vort’n Vis & Genet records. They represent over 18 years of experience of organising & promoting underground events. By joining hands, they manage to make the mother of all European underground hardcore festivals the big success it has always been. Profits are split up between both collectives who re-invest it in their future projects. Check www.vortnvis.net & www.genetrecords.com to learn more about the organisers.
In 2009 we are having the 17th edition, already, of what started as a small scale festival but slowly has grown to an annual event with about 5000+ visitors from all over the world. Over the years we have welcomed many legendary acts like 100 DEMONS, ABHINANDA, ABORTED, ACME, AGATHOCLES, ALL OUT WAR, AMENRA, ANGEL CREW, ANOTHER BREATH, AS FRIENDS RUST, BATHTUB SHITTER, BLACK FRIDAY ’29, BORN/DEAD, BORN FROM PAIN, CALIBAN, CAREER SUICIDE, CATARACT, CATHARSIS, the CHARIOT, CHILDREN OF FALL, CHIMAERA, CHOKEHOLD, CONFRONTO, CONGRESS, DARKEST HOUR, DEADLOCK, DEADSOIL, DEAD STOP, DESPAIR, DISCARGA, DO OR DIE, EARTHMOVER, ENSIGN, FABULOUS DISASTER, FACEDOWNINSHIT, FEAR OF GOD, FUCKED UP, the GET UP KIDS, GOOD CLEAN FUN, GRADE, HEAVEN SHALL BURN, HIMSA, HORSE THE BAND, HOODS, HOT WATER MUSIC, INTEGRITY, INTENSITY, I SHOT CYRUS, JR EWING, KNUCKLEDUST, KNUT, LEIAH, LENG TCH'E, LET IT BURN, LIAR, the LOCUST, MADBALL, MAINSTRIKE, MAJORITY RULE, MAROON, MAXIMUM PENALTY, MDC, MENTAL, METROSCHIFTER, MISERY INDEX, MÖRSER, MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD, NEAERA, NEW MEXICAN DISASTER SQUAD, NINE, das OATH, the OCEAN, PAINT IT BLACK, PANTHERS, PARKWAY DRIVE, POINT OF NO RETURN, PRETTY GIRLS MAKE GRAVES, PURIFICATION, RATOS DE PORAO, REFLUX, REFUSED, REIZIGER, REJUVENATE, REMEMBERING NEVER, RESTLESS YOUTH, REQUIEM, RISE & FALL, the RITES, SATANIC SURFERS, SEEIN’ RED, SEPARATION, SERENE, SETTLE THE SCORE, the SETUP, SHAI HULUD, SOME GIRLS, the SPECTACLE, SIX FT DITCH, STARKWEATHER, STIGMATA, STRENGTH APPROACH, SWING KIDS, SWITCHBLADE, SWORN ENEMY, TEXTURES, 25 TA LIFE, VANILLA, VERSE, VITAMIN X, VOORHEES, WITH LOVE, YEAR FUTURE, ZERO MENTALITY …The list is endless!! Ieper is situated in the Flemish speaking part of Belgium, in the so-called H8000 area (legendary among HC kids worldwide) and just 15 km away from the French border. The closest bigger cities are Kortrijk (B) & Lille (Fr). Ieper is a cosy town with just 25000 inhabitants, internationally known as one of the war fields during both the first & second World Wars. Check here for more info on the area.
ACCESSIBILITY FOR DISABLED PERSONS
To make the accessibility of our festival as easy as possible for everyone, we made some special efforts for disabled persons. We realised these efforts with the support of the National Lottery and the organisation Intro.
For disabled persons we took the following measures:
- separate parking places near the festival
- adjusted toilet for disabled persons on the festival
- a raised stage to improve the visibility
- assistance dogs are allowed on the festival
- during the after-parties there’s also an adjusted toilet
- professional supervisors can enter for free (must show proof)
- if you have other questions, you can ask them to the workers at the entrance
- specially adapted shower available on the camping site
This way, we hope that everyone can enjoy a pleasant festival.
And for those who can’t find any satisfaction in what we’re organising, there is plenty more to do in the Ieper area during the festival weekend. No hard feelings though, haha … All brochures can be found at the MTM-stage.
• Every evening since 1928, at precisely eight o'clock in the evening, the Last Post - the traditional salute to the fallen warrior – is being played under the Menin Gate Memorial, that’s the big gate at the beginning of the street where the fest used to take place. This daily tribute - performed by a team of local bugler players - serves to honour the memory of the soldiers of the British Empire, who fought and died in the Immortal Ypres Salient during the First World War. The Last Post Association aims to maintain this ceremony in perpetuity. Every evening at 20.00 you can go listen to ‘The Last Post’. If we counted well ceremony numbers 27852, 27853 & 27854 will be performed during the days of the fest. Check: www.lastpost.be and hear for yourself

• The “In Flanders Fields Museum” wants to confront its visitors with the past, as well as with the present. With the story of one particular war in one particular place – WW I in the Westhoek – but also with the universal theme of war in general, that rages on always and everywhere. With the official facts, names and dates, but first and foremost with the personal witness accounts of hundreds of ordinary people. The IFFM is a war museum with a message of peace. It helps us remember the future. Located in the towncentre: Lakenhallen – Grote markt 34. More details (prices, opening times) through www.inflandersfields.be
• A ticket to the IFFM grants you free access to the Municipal Museum Ypres (Ieperleestraat 5), the Municipal Museum of Education (Sint-Niklaaskerk in G. de Stuersstraat 6A) and the Godshuis Belle Museum.(Rijselsestraat 38). No specific websites for these museums but check www.ieper.be and click ‘museums’ or email stedelijke.musea@ieper.be
• ‘What Remains’. Belgian artist Camiel Van Breedam is the Artist in Residence 2009. For almost half a century he has been making assemblages and environments with discarded materials. A frequently recurring theme is the loss of life, civilisation and knowledge caused by ruthless progress, by war, injustice and oppression. For the belfy room in the IFFM he created a new environment about death (J’ai rendez-vouz avec vous (7x7)). The foyer and the Western wing of the Cloth Hall show an extensive overview of his works against war and violence.
What? What remains. Artist Camiel Van Breedam When? 10/07/2009 – 4/10/2009, open from 10AM – 17PM Where? In Flanders Fields Museum, Lakenhallen, Grote Markt 32, 8900 Ieper

Another option is asking for a map + info sheet and walk the route by yourself. Opening hours: Monday to Friday: 9AM – 6PM. On Saturdays and Sundays: 10AM – 6PM. Go for a walk and enjoy a route between stones, greenery & water …

• Paschendale, Iron Maiden made a song about the place. Passendale and Zonnebeke are two little villages, at a stone's throw from Ypres. You can visit the “Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917”. During the British attack of 1917, there were 500.000 casualties in 100 days and this for only 5 miles of territory gained! Passchendaele became an international symbol of senseless military violence in its most cruel form. In the Memorial Museum the memory of the battle is kept alive through images and movies, a large collection of historical artefacts and several life-like-dioramas. Eye-catcher is an underground dugout tunnel with communication- and dressing post, headquarters, workplaces and dormitories. A breathtaking experience of how the British had to live underground like moles... just because there was nothing left above. The museum is set up in the historical castle of Zonnebeke (Ieperstraat 5), on the road to Tyne Cot Cemetery (more info below). You can also pay a visit to a recently discovered underground dressing post, the German trenches in Bayernwald and strategic points like the Menin Road, 's Graventafel and Polygon Wood with a professional guide. The MMP 1917 is an ideal starting point for a visit to the old battlefields, an absolute must for tourists and specialists. Want to know more: www.passchendaele.be
• Tyne Cot Cemetery is the largest Commonwealth cemetery in the world. It is also the most important reminder of the bloody battle of Passchendaele. During the British offensive of 1917 tens of thousands of soldiers died here in a period of one hundred (100!) days for a gain of barely eight kilometres. Originally ‘Tyne Cot’ was a bunker on the german Flandern I line. On 4 October 1917, Australian soldiers captured the position and used it as an advanced dressing station. Soldiers who died of their injuries there were buried on site. Before long a small cemetery had come into being with some three hundred graves. Between 1919 and 1921 specialist units called Exhumation Companies brought almost 12.000 dead to Tyne Cot from the surrounding battlefields. Most of their names are unknown. The cemetery was designed by Sir Herbert Baker and was inaugurated in 1927. It was built and is splendidly maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The rear wall of the cemetery is a Memorial to the Missing. It bears names of 35.000 British and New Zealand servicemen who fell in the vicinity after 16 August 1917. Tyne Cot Memorial continues the list of names inscribed on the Ypres Menin Gate. Today a new visitor infrastructure offers you a unique view over the battlefields. This cemetery should preferably be combined with a visit to the ‘MMP 1917’, where the story of the actual battle is told. A 3 kilometre-long historic walking and cycling route runs between these two places: ‘The road to Passchendaele’.

Food & drinks
As you might know, Ieperfest is also known for its big diversity of (non-)alcoholic beverages and its lovely 100% vegan food available for everyone around. And damn, what do you think if we tell you that for this 17th edition we will stick to this cherished plan ??
If you’ve had it with all the regular beers and soda’s (which you still can buy at the bar), go check out the Oxfam-Wereldwinkels fair-trade drinks. Oxfam-Wereldwinkel is the major shareholder in the cooperative organisation Oxfam Fairtrade, wholesaler in fair trade food products. At the current market price, farmers selling their coffee, cacao and sugar do not get sufficient income. Oxfam Fairtrade is fighting against this unfair situation... If you support this idea, have one of the drinks we sell. We’ve got different ones for you to discover:
- First of all there ‘s the coffee. You can have the Arabica-coffee, generally appreciated for its mild aftertaste. A typical breakfast coffee, with its origins in Nicaragua, Bolivia, Guatemala, Honduras and Tanzania.
- Second of all 2 different kinds of tea are sold: Black Pekoe tea from Kenia/Uganda and Darjeeling green tea with that little Indian flavour, because Darjeeling is a region in India. Knowledge is a beautiful thing.
- Third of all 2 fair trade beers, labelled as Bolivar, can also be ordered: One dark beer with a nice balance of lightly sweet, sour and bitter and a full-bodied blond beer, fruity with a touch of bitter. Both beers with secondary fermentation in the bottle and brewed using traditional Belgian methods and raw materials from the South (Costa Rica (cane sugar), Bolivia (quinoa), India (basmati rice)). Watch out and take your precautions: 33cl of 7,5 degrees alcohol !!
- Last but not least we still have several juices to offer. All of them contain no sugar and no artificial colours or flavours were added. Please excuse us if we have different flavours than mentioned below:
- Orange juice: pure and unsweetened juice from oranges straight from Brazil & Cuba.
- Worldshake: a tasty original blend of grapefruits, oranges, bananas and beetroots, completed by freshly pressed apple juice. Please, have a taste of Cuba (oranges, grapefruits), Brazil (oranges) and Ecuador (bananas)!
But the ‘inner’ us need more than beverage, oh yes indeed, it also needs food. And what’s more: it needs delicious food, no doubt about that. And what’s even more ‘more’: this year we’re having a totally new cooking team working their asses off to serve you those vitamins we all need so hard, so we can mosh the clock around.
Theo, the man behind GSR, shows his other, for most unknown, side and will let us meet (not meat) with his cooking-skills. At this very own moment we’re as curious as you might or should be, because the cook told us: “don’t expect the normal festival food, let’s take it a step higher and prove every single person at the fest, there is no need to walk to town to find something you might like.“ Check the kitchen message board for detailed information about all food matters. And please, dare to try things out … taste and share your findings with everyone around, let’s make food a topic again !!
And, hell yeah, this year we’re selling that splendid vegan ice cream again. And if we say splendid, we mean extremely splendid because the B’Nice Belgian Natural Vanilla Rice Cream even won ‘the 2007 Peta Proggy award for progress’. And that for best non-diary food product. Admit it … you just have to try these great balls of ice !! And, hoho, we’re making it even harder for you ice-licking-lovers and serve you, besides the Vanilla Rice Ice, 3 more flavours of this first class Rice Ice: Strawberry, Chocolate & Gingerbread.
Damn, I wish I was just a visitor, so I could be as spoiled as you all are !!
Non-music
Hardcore, more than music!
…Animal, earth and human liberation will only come through education… (Chokehold)
Indeed, hardcore is more than just music! We’ve once again put together a series of non-musical activities to feed the minds of the politically, socially and ethically active people and to educate those who are oblivious to the matter. We are even introducing a third stage this year: the MTM-Stage (More Than Music Stage), as we want this part of the festival to play an even bigger role in this year’s edition! Check it out from time to time, feed your head, feel free to discuss,… We can all learn from each other!
This is what we have in mind. Check the message board in front of the MTM-Stage for a daily update. Subject to change.

11 h. Indymeeting
Alternative Media Coverage of Ieperfest on Indymedia.be
Ieperfest will be covered by a group of independent journalists/media activists from the alternative media collective Indymedia.be
In a society where traditional media tend to commercialize and avoid social coverage, Indymedia is an independent organisation that brings daily and reliable news on what’s going (wr)on(g) in our society. It's a free news website based on the work of volunteers who publish their own news about activism and social movements.
“On Ieperfest we will be working as a team, meeting every morning at 11 h. to discuss and divide the work, and to publish our pictures and articles of the festival on www.indymedia.be” M-A.
If you’d also like to do a report on Ieperfest through your pictures, video, interviews,… and get your stuff posted on Indymedia.be: great! Contact marc-antoonATindymedia.be

Daily Discussion - 'What's wrong with the media?'
Indymedia.be also invites everyone to a daily discussion at 14 h./15 h. (check schedule) on the topic 'What's wrong with the media?' Why do the mainstream media produce such a one-sided view of reality? Is another story possible? Every day we'll approach this topic from a different angle. Please join and have your say!
Every day, Indymedia.be will be showing a selection of 15 short videoreports made by media activists from the Indymedia.be network. The topics range from anti-NATO protests to ecology, over migration, culture and poverty and much more.
14 h. Discussion 'Media & alternative culture' Indymedia.be
Is there a place in the mainstream media for the work of non-commercial artists/musicians with a critical message? Why (not)? What about Ieperfest, for example? Mainstream media are mostly looking for stereotypes and the sensational. Why is that? And what happens if alternative artists break through the media silence anyhow? Do they have to sell their soul for that?
16 h. ‘Reconstruction anti-NATO-days’ (Dmedia.ro, 56 min.)
Intro/outro by Nadia Len.
Reconstruction is an experimental documentary about the repression of the anti-NATO events in Romania in 2008 and their brutal repression. It was filmed during a 4 day workshop, in which 10 protagonists became simultaneously actors, audience and directors. The same moment of history is re-told through different perspectives: the objective, the subjective and the collective.
Film in Romanian, subtitles in English.

18 h. ‘Finding Truth’ - Carl (FIRST BLOOD) Spoken Word
In a time where people just think about consuming and consume without thinking, where the crowd seems to be interested in none other than the self, there are luckily still people who try to lead a positive and critical way of life.
We are very proud to announce that Carl, singer from FIRST BLOOD (and ex-member of TERROR), is so gentle and kind to support the More Than Music–stage at Ieperfest with a spoken word session. Carl will give us an enlightment about the 9/11 topic & some politics, and not only on the American point of view, but expand to a global scale.
If you want to amplify your horizons, if you want to be informed by a brave human being who doesn’t take anything for granted, than please show up at 18.00 in the MTM-stage. Carl will be honored to receive each and every one of you!
He doesn’t claim to be perfect, but at least he tries… You’re next?
20 h. ‘Roll Up Your Sleeves’ the DIY Counterculture (Dylan Haskins, 27 min.)
Roll Up Your Sleeves is a manifesto for an alternative way of organizing, working and thinking.
The debut film from 21 year old Dylan Haskins and a group of his friends was two years in the making. The documentary is a colourful exploration of the phenomenon of 'Do-It-Yourself' counterculture from the starting point of his own group of friends and their local alternative community. The journey of discovery leads Haskins to drive a US folk punk band on their European tour and looks at the relationship between DIY ideology and European autonomous social centres. This is contrasted with the Seomra Spraoi social centre project in Dublin and the problems they face. Independent music features as a thread throughout the film.
Interviewees include Ian MacKaye of legendary alternative bands FUGAZI and MINOR THREAT, Ellen Lupton, author of DIY: Design it Yourself and Curator of Contemporary Design at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York, Ellie and Louise Macnamara of young irish band HEATHERS and members of long running Dutch experimental punk band THE EX.
Film in Irish

21 h. ‘In Transit’ (Dmedia.ro, 30 min.) & ‘Precarious Lives’ (Dmedia.ro, 43 min.)
In Transit is a diary of a journey through space and time, composed of subjective impressions of the present and childhood memories of the past. While traveling across Romania in the year of its EU accession, the narrative reflects on postcommunist transition, the re-writing of history and the relation between images and memory.
Precarious Lives mixes archival footage depicting women’s labour over the past century with ten portraits of Romanian women working today. The video challenges the dominant discourse about precarity and its disregard of differences based on gender and of economic disparities between the first and third worlds of Europe.
Films in Romanian, subtitles in English.

13 h. HELLO BASTARDS – Report from Israel/Palestine Tour
VegAnarchist Straight Edge Crust band ‘HELLO BASTARDS’ from Brazil, Argentina, Poland, Israel and Germany who have been living in London for many years wanted to do a spoken word about their Israel tour. Who are we to refuse such an offer?
Taken from their myspace, these words are written by a friend who went along for the tour. These views do not necessarily represent those of Hello Bastards.
“In a recent interview conducted with Norman Finkelstein for a Middle Eastern newspaper, when asked if he will ever return to Israel he replied “I do not have any particular interest to go and visit that lunatic state.” I have to say, I concur completely with that statement. In fact I feel that Israel is not just a lunatic state but also a fascist and racist one at that and returning to that country is the last thing I can envisage doing (unless to go and demonstrate in Palestine.) In our short time in Israel I have witnessed both fascism and racism first hand; this country needs to take a serious look at itself - I have never been to a country which is on the verge of becoming a clone of Nazi Germany, maybe I am exaggerating but I have come away from this tour feeling depressed and seriously concerned for the safety of those I have left behind…”
Their story, pictures, commentary,… will start a discussion for sure!
Israeli band SUCKINIM BAENAIM is joining us after their performance on the Marquee Stage.

15 h. Discussion 'Media & ecology' Indymedia.be
Our way of life is destroying the planet. Can the mainstream media help society change its unsustainable system of production and consumption, or are the media a part of the problem? Media are an instrument to raise awareness, but commercial media are financed by advertisements, so they depend on (over)consumption... So, is the attention paid to ecology in the mainstream media more than 'green washing'? And what about climate change: do the media inform us enough?
17 h. Sea Shepherd Presentation – this is also a benefit…
Have you ever watched the Animal Planet TV series "Whale Wars"? Those people on board the Steve Irwin are real heroes! We are very honored to have them at Ieperfest for a presentation about their activities. Free donation!
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Sea Shepherd's Mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Even with the laws in place to protect our oceans, the rape and pillage of the seas continues as governments look the other way. It takes a pirate to catch a pirate, and that's why President and Founder Captain Paul Watson declares, "We are pirates of compassion in pursuit of pirates of profit and greed." We've created our own Jolly Roger to fly on the high seas as we hunt down the offenders: in place of two crossed swords, ours has the crossed shepherd's staff and Neptune's trident under a human skull engraved with the yin and yang-like symbols of the dolphin and whale.

19 h. AaE performance (softdrone with visual message)
ALL ABOUT EVIL brings their typical intimate show on Ieperfest. AaE’s combination of sound and image confronts their audience with some of the flaws of mankind and even their influence on history. Although the softdrone that AaE brings is no match for the hardcore music of today, the DIY approach of the band and their critical voice however does.

21 h. ‘Home’ (Yann Arthus-Bertrand, 96 min.)
“In a few short decades, humanity has upset the balance of the planet, established by nearly four billion years of evolution. The price to pay is high, but it’s too late to be a pessimist: humanity has barely ten years to reverse the trend, become aware of the full extent of its spoliation of the earth’s riches and change its patterns of consumption.
By bringing us unique footage from over fifty countries, all seen from the air, by sharing with us his wonder and his concern, with this film Yann Arthus-Bertrand lays a foundation stone for the edifice that, together, we must rebuild.”

14 h. Discussion 'Media & racism' Indymedia.be
Are mainstream media helpful in combatting racism, or are they on the contrary producing racism? In other words: do they bring us closer together or are they promoting fear of everything that's “strange”, “foreign”? For example: how are the media portraying muslims? And what does the news tell us about Africa? All those racist stereotypes, where do they come from? And what's the alternative?
15 h. ‘15 jaar AFA, 15 jaar strijdbaar’ (Antifa Holland, 50 min.)
‘ 15 years of AFA, 15 years of combat’…
Anti Fascist Action (AFA) strives to combat racist, extreme right-wing, neo-nazi and neo-fascist groups, parties and tendencies. The extreme right abuse their freedom of speech to discriminate against people and groups and incorrectly accuses these people of being the cause of social problems. Extreme right-wing organisations and political parties always propose false solutions for social problems. They use nationalistic or racial solution for issues such as migration, population composition, job opportunities and crime. They attempt to create a schism in society. The extreme right tries to destabilise society and incite -sometimes subtly - racial hatred and violence against ethnic groups. Right-wing extremism also makes the entire political climate more right-wing when established political parties adopt extreme right-wing points of view so as not to lose any votes instead of combating and refuting prejudice and racism.
In order to combat the political shift right and extreme right-wing activity AFA undertakes actions. This can be in the guise of a demonstration, a blockade, the dissemination of flyers in order to inform people, flyposting and the support of other organisations. They also provide information to schools and the press, publish the Alert! magazine and issue informational brochures. Furthermore, they investigate the extreme right.

16 h. ‘Antifascist Attitude’ (Antifa Russia, 73 min.)
"Anti-Fascist Attitude" is the first ever documentary on the emerging Russian anti-fascist movement which is made by the activists themselves. The movie features both moderate NGO activists and radical grassroots activists and anarchists from three cities - Moscow, St. Petersburg and Irkutsk. It also features Stanislav Markelov, murdered in Moscow on 19th January.

18 h. ‘Live Blogspot’ - Davin (xKINGDOMx) Spoken Word*
Oh boy, this girl can write…! Seriously, what a very nice way to read all about the adventures of xKINGDOMx on tour, to learn all about different cultures worldwide and all the things that makes this life worth living. Inspiring stuff this, www.xkingdomx.blogspot.com.
Good friend Marty (Ieperfest-crew) recently did an interview with Davin and only had one question: ‘About the Rage that guides us…’ He ended up with enough fuel for life to last a lifetime and of course invited her to do a spoken word on Ieperfest. Davin accepted the offer…
More info: www.xkingdomx.blogspot.com
*This spoken word is scheduled at 18 h. on Sunday, but this can change quite easily. Be sure to check out the xKINGDOM performance and sharpen your ears or check out the messageboard in front of the MTM-stage!
20 h. 2 or 3 Things about Activism (Dmedia.ro, 73 min.)
2 or 3 Things about Activism is a counter-documentary about activism in Romania that simultaneously questions the difference between making a film about politics and making a film politically. While various protagonists discuss their views on activism, the voiceover reflects on the motivations behind the video.
Film in Romanian, subtitles in English.

Ieperfest Zine Library
What started off as a small Zine Library last year is slowly but surely turning into a decent collection of Zines from around the world. There will be a really cozy reading room near the MTM-stage (thanks to Kringloopwinkel West*). Feel free to read’em here, but put’em back, thanks!
We kindly ask everyone who makes musical or pure political zines to bring 2 copies to the tent right next to the distro tent (the MTM-stage). Your zine will be available for everyone to read for the duration of the festival and then taken up into the Ieperfest Zine Library for future editions. A great chance for you to spread the DIY ethics and ideas of our movement and to present your work.
If you would like to keep feeding the Ieperfest Zine Library with your zine, please contact us at ‘xpositiveheartxATtelenet.be’ or send them to

Welcome to Kringloopwinkel West
In the Kringloopwinkel West, we collect, sort en resell discarded product to stimulate the re-use of goods as well as to create job opportunities for people in need.
We have four shops spread over the regions the Westkust and the Westhoek: in Diksmuide, Ieper, Poperinge and Veurne.
All the goods are donated and are collected by us upon telephone calls (078/15.50.05). People can also bring their consumer goods to one of our shops (addresses on our website: www.kringloopwinkelwest.be).
We process all sort of items: textiles, toys, books, CD’s and DVD’s, bicycles, household tools, furniture, electrical and electronic household appliances, etc.
We actually don’t have an internal repair service.
Eventually the re-usable consumer product ends up in one of our shops.
Our customers must get a good feeling, visiting these shops. Therefore we recently gave our shops a totally different style.

Bookfair
So we’ve decided to start a little bookfair on Ieperfest as well. Independent editors and distributors, Zines, NGO's and action groups from around the world are more than welcome to set up a stand near the MTM-stage. (get in touch for further instructions: bertjebefAThotmail.com).
This is the place to be for critical, counter-current books and publications, hard to find in mainstream bookstores. Copyleft not Copyright.
Garbage
Believe us: we have been brainstorming, thinking and RE-thinking for months and months and months and months how we can reduce the amount of waste people left on our, now green again, festivalsite. And damn, the result of this thinking process was quite flabbergasting:
We just can’t understand visitors -and you’re probably one of them- that don’t make any effort to support us in our quest to keep the ground as neat as it was before we even put up the first tent. It is so depressing to see you all leave on Sunday eve or Monday morning and see the mess staying where it doesn’t belong …
But let me put it like Ice-T once did: “They did everything they could to take us out but like any good monster that just made us stronger. “ And so here we are again with an even stronger waste policy.
Please use some of your precious time to read it because this policy goes way further than just the festival. The organizers of Ieperfest still want to prove to all the disbelievers around the globe that recycling can be done on festivals too. Yes, you’re right, we set an example for every one out there. Because in the last few months we’ve send our sons & daughters around to compare all the different waste policies on other fests and we’re damn proud we do … oh no … we ARE Ieperfest !!
But we also know there can be done much more than what we did on the last editions. We don’t claim to be perfect, but at least we try. In the end we will all enjoy the benefits of our behaviour nowadays … And that’s why we’re asking you all to help us out and do this the way it should be done because we believe it should be the standard of how we deal with waste. There will be no compromise, no more negotiating …
OK, here we go: In Belgium we have a very strict sorting-system and we figured out that a long and expanded approach like we had here last year, explaining you guys in FULL detail how you SHOULD recycle, doesn’t work. So this time, we'll make it simple & easy for you:
Glass: Fuck it, we don’t want it here, so don’t even bother to bring it. It is not allowed on the camping either. A few weeks after the fest, cows will be grazing (NOT glazing!) on it. If you feel the urge to be an arse and bring your own glass bottles to the fest, we will ask you to put them in one of the big glass containers we put at the entrance of the camping and the festivalground or in some of the smaller ones around. There’s actually a huge change that the word ‘GLASS’ is written on it. You just can’t miss it.
PMD: what the f* … PMD stands for Plastic bottles, Metallic cans and Drinking cartons. And every Belgian knows, or should know, that this kind of waste belongs in a BLUE bin or bag, ready to be reused. And from now on, even if you’re not a Belgian & you never plan to become one, you still have to know AND remember this!!
Paper & cardboard: You can throw Paper & cardboard in the big cardboard boxes that you’ll find in the tent where the bands and some distro’s will try to sell you all kinds of stuff, that sometimes is wrapped in non-recyclable plastic. You know where to get rid of that piece of plastic crap.
Organic waste: this green bin just loves food… and food only. Which means that the package where the food was wrapped in, doesn’t belong in this bin!! And what’s more even the food doesn’t belong in it as long as it can be eaten, and there is always somebody around who will eat it. Just ask around. And if you don’t find anyone, bring it to the MTM-stage. I bet you there will be people around who finish your plate with great pleasure. Just say NO to leftovers !!
Green plates: if you were on one of the last editions, you will recognize the lovely green, long-lasting hard plastic plates. So I don’t have to tell you that they are being re-used. From this year on we ask you to pay a warrant (extra food coupon) just because the kitchen-team have had it to run out of plates and have to go look for them because people just didn’t return them. A sad thing it is. Anyway, if you return your plate to our special ‘RETURNPOINT’ nearby the kitchen and bar, you will get a food coupon back. Sounds awfully easy, right? The plates will be washed with 100% biodegradable washing-up liquid (www.ecover.com). So you can use them again. What a service, what a pleasure, what a festival !!
Drinking cups: Sadly, our nice grey tubes have disappeared from this year's fest picture, but again, something NEW and hopefully even MORE EFFICIENT: fully bio-degradable cups made out of corn! Hurray! And we want to separate all the cups from other trash, because we’ll give them to a composting-factory who’s going to use our cups to test, and hopefully, find the best way to compost them. Ieperfest (and you) could be an important pawn in this story of getting a step closer to a greener world. So help us a hand (or two) and collect those cups. We make you a deal: YOU collect 50 biocups and YOU get ONE drink CHIP in return! So get on your feet, collect & drink some more! Lets make this cup-thing work !!
All other stuff that can’t be recycled: if you’re holding something that doesn’t fit in one of the groups we’ve just explained before, you might hold something that can’t be recycled (yet) and maybe that’s why we call it non-recyclable waste. BUT hey, you can still put in into the right bin on the fest. Shit, this is not normal: there’s a bin for everything… for everything, oh yes, everything, even for all you smokers out there!! Or at least for your cigarette butts... please do NOT throw them on the grass or anywhere else, but IN the ashtrays you will find close by the bins. Not normal, I say … just NOT NORMAL !!
Human wasted liquids and/or solids: We also ask everyone, men and women, to use the toilets to piss and shit. There are plenty of them on the fest and campsite. All of them will be cleaned on a daily base or more if needed. There‘s really no need to annoy the plants and grass with your body’s wasted liquids or solids. The festival ground’s smell will surely benefit from it and the chance of pissing on your own shoes will be reduced to almost zero …
Showers: This year we appeal to bring only 100% biodegradable shower gel to our showers. And if you don’t have any, don’t panic: we try to provide some ECOVER shower gel to everyone that wants to shower. Totally free of charge (!!). So please leave those nature-killing-soaps & gels at home and gain from our generosity, as long as you’ve got the chance to do so …
Campsite: Everyone has to admit that the campsite is a pain point for every festival; it seems to be hard or even impossible to keep the campsite tidy. Kind of strange if you ask me: how stupid it is to ‘fest’ on an untainted site if the campsite is nasty … and hey, we’re talking about the same people staying there. I don’t get it, and in fact we as organizers don’t have to care, cuz none of us are sleeping over there anyways. But that’s just not us. We want the campsite funky and clean, so same rules on the campsite as on the festivalground. And from this edition we ask you to use the bags we offer you when you enter the camping for the first time, collect your trash, rubbish, rubble, debris, detritus, waste or whatever you like to call it, put it in the right bin, that you always can find at the entrance/exit of the camping, and re-use the bag we gave you !!!
All of us are campers/visitors/organizers/shitworkers/bandmembers with certain responsibilities, whether you like it or not. All big deeds start very small within yourself… take (our) action and keep it untainted wherever you may roam… The Ieperfest collective and, even more important, Mother Earth will be so grateful !!
And if you want to do more than we ask you to do, feel free to do so, we won’t complain at all. You must know that your splendid example could be followed by many others. And YES, it is allowed to discuss with people that might think this policy doesn’t count for them, show them the right way. You got our full permission to speak your mind… fuck yeah… even to us, if you think you might have a splendid idea for the next editions to keep it even more neat than this one. We’re all clean ears … Thank you very much !!

Lodging
Using the festival camping will cost 10 Euro, no matter how many nights you are staying. Of course, we can't stop you from booking accomodation in the city centre, but if you are planning on camping, please use our festival camping, and don't camp "in the wild"!
The Ieperfest camping site will be open fromThursday August 27th at around 2 pm, untilMonday August 31st, noontime! Please respect this schedule! Don't arrive too early, don't leave too late!
- Acces to the camping site cannot be obtained if you are not in possession of an official Ieperfest festival wrist bracelet! In other words: no intention to attend the festival = don't even bother coming over and trying to gain acces to the camping.
- Products kept in glass packages, such as fruit and vegetables in jars, some drinks ... are not allowed on the Ieperfest camping.
- It's enjoyable for everyone to camp on a clean and well maintained camping site. That's why the waste disposal policy of the fest is also applied to the camping site! Waste islands will be provided! The manual to these islands is to be found in the fest's program brochures and on the island itself.
- We very destinctively ask you to support our waste disposal policy, and nature itself, by sorting out and recycling your garbage/waste in the appropriate thrash cans!
- Please leave your camping place behind as neat as it was upon arrival!
- Fire is dangerous, and is not allowed in any form on the Ieperfest camping site. So no camp fires, fireworks, barbeques etc.
- Drugs are not allowed at Ieperfest. Neither is alcohol abuse. Drunk people, or people intoxicated in any other way, that disturb other people can and will be removed from the camping site!
- For your own safety we advise you not to block the fire lanes or emergency exits. Your tent will be moved if necessary!
- Pets are not allowed on the campsite. This does, obviously, not include guide dogs for the visually disabled.
- Weapons and dangerous objects are not tolerated.
- Party tents are allowed. However, do not make centre spaces for sitting and chilling to large, as everyone has the right to a comfortable spot on the camping site.
- Power supplies and power generators are not allowed on the Ieperfest camping site, as they are sources that can easily cause fires in dry weather conditions.
- Our security team is constantly present at the camping, and will keep an eye out! Violating any of these rules can result in getting banned from the camping site!
- Notify the campsite responsibles in case of trouble.
- The festival organisation cannot be held responsible for theft or accidents involving physical injuries.
- We provided environmentally friendly showergel from Ecover. The showers are closed between 1h00 and 7h00.
