| 10. Pennisetum 'Purple Majesty'
Unfortunately not hardy, so you must take seeds
every year but what a beauty!
The dark colored leaves with a hinge of bronze
and green in it, and the magnificent flower, almost black, with silver dots. |
  |
| 9.
Deschampsia cespitosa
An elegantly waving grass that flowers silvery white in july and after that
the leaves and the flowers turn to yellow and stay like that during the
winter. |
 |
| 8.Panicum
'Shenandoah' Beautifull red and green
leaves and the flowers are beautiful red as well, so elegant, so fine.
Panicums have become very popular among
ornamental grasses lovers in a very short time, maybe because of their
subtle flowering and bushy growth. |
 |
| 7.Miscanthus 'Malepartus'
One of the many Miscanthus culivars. The plumes of this one are really
beautifull dark red in august, after that they turn to silvery white in
september- oktober.
A must for the autumn border because it still gives structure and filling at
that time of year. The leaf turns to bright yellow. |
 |
| 6.Carex coman 'Bronze
Form' Often people think this grass looks dead because of the brown color.
But it is very alive, when it comes out of the ground in spring it is more a
vivid orange and afterwards it turns to brown. In spring you must cut it
down to the ground to make a healthy plant.
Very lovely with yellow leaved
plants like the new Heuchera 'Amber Waves'. |
  |
| 5.Stipa gigantea
Very
elegant grass, a large green clump where the long stems emerge from with
their hanging seeds. Alas it is not very reliable in severe frosts and is
not the easiest of the ornamental grasses. |
 |
| 4.Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum'
Very very beautifull grass with its very dark, nearly black leaves. The
flower heads combine with it very lovely because of their dark purple color.
But, again not very hardy in our climate. In fact we cannot say it is a
hardy perennial. But I like it so much that gladly make the effort to keep
it indoors in winter and take it out again when all risk of frost is gone. |
 |
| 3.Stipa arundinacea
Lovely elegant grass. The leaves come in the colors orange, green, a bit of
red, a bit of yellow, it sounds like a mish mash but in fact it looks very
nice. And the flowers are superb, a cloud that covers the leaves completely
as you can see. |
 |
| 2.Calamagrostis brachytricha
Grass that went to the top of my list is no time because of its lovely
plumes. It flowers late in the season, it only starts in september and
because of that is a good addition for the autumn border.
Syn. Stipa brachytricha |

| 1.
Molinia caerulea 'Transparent'
Lovely grass but very difficult to photograph properly.
Long stems with very fine flowerheads emerge from a green clump.
You
can easily see through it, that it is why it is called Transparent.
The
leaves and stems turn to bright yellow in late autumn.
Very good for
flower arrangers. |
