The weather in Old Castile

Old Castile is the area above Madrid, delimited by Ávila, Burgos, Logroño, Palencia, Segovia and Soria. Geographically speaking Old Castile roughly matches the basin of the Douro River. Its summers are hot and its winters firmly cold.

Urbión

The mountain range of Urbión surprises and enthrals by its green hills and numerous watercourses, flowing through meadows and pine woods.

From November till May the roads may be covered by snow.

Laguna Negra

Depicted at an altitude of 5,576 ft. rests a lonely glacier lake. The Black Lagoon is surrounded by steep rock cliffs in a semicircle. This amphitheater of rock, reflected in the lagoon waters, is an area of breathtaking beauty.

... Laguna Negra

The lake is a remnant of the last Ice Age, which remains relatively unspoiled, no doubt because it is hard to reach. The Black Lagoon is fed by two waterfalls supplying meltwater.

Montenegro de Cameros

The only way that leads from Vinuesa to Doubles takes its travelers along Monenegro. The route is splendid and the little agricultural village of Montenegro is beautifully surrounded by green hills. The gothic parish church of Our Lady boasts a 13th century statue of the White Virgin.

Reserva Nacional de Caza

After a steady climb we finally arrive at the Puerto de Santa Inés (5,750 ft.). From here a lift takes alpine skiers to a height of 6,642 ft. in the wintertime.

The Reserva Nacional de Caza is the perfect place for mountain tourism or to practice outdoor sports.

The natural reserve of Caza offers a free walk-around for grazing cows.

La Rioja

The vale of the Ebro River is the most important area of viticulture in Spain.

La Rioja has always been a vital part of Spain's history. Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Moors, and finally, medieval Crusaders have all played a part in the area's history. The Romans, however, made wine a part of their culture wherever they traveled, and Rioja was no exception.

... La Rioja

Today, Rioja is divided into three regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Baja. Rioja Alta is composed primarily of alluvial soil, calcareous clay and ferruginous clay. As the name suggests, much of this area is in higher altitudes.

The Ebro valley broadens in the Lower Rioja. In fact, the word Rioja is a derivation of the two words Rio (River) and Oja , the name of a tributary of the Ebro, located near the region's southwestern boundary.

The ocher colored table landscape serves as an appetiser for what awaits you in Aragón.

Sierra de la Demanda

The Sierra de la Demanda is a singular mountain system, which rises to the south-east of the province of Burgos. Montenegro offers an eminent vantage point towards the splendid itinerary throughout the Sierra de la Demanda, elevated some 6,888 ft. The perspective is breathtaking.

Monastery of Yuso

The 16th-18th century monastery of Yuso is famous because its library contains the first book written in the Castillian language. The monastery was built in the renaissance and baroque period. It's a stop on the famous St-Jacobs route to Santiago de Compostella.

... Valley of the River Iregua

The valley becomes narrower and more densely forested after we passed two tunnels. Further upstream the Iregua becomes a wild tempestuous chasm rivier.

Playa Pita

We camped at the banks of the Playa Pita near Molinos de Duero. As you can see the whole beach was ours to enjoy.

Molinos de Duero

It's not so common to witness a true medieval market. Swordsman and archers stood towards one another in Molinos.

We preferred this bagpipe player who produced marvelous stirring up music. A real stroke of luck.

Herreros

Another tiny village in the neigborhood of Playa Pita. We went for a hilly walk and got rewarded with this nice outlook.

Orillares

We're on our way to the splendid canyon of Rio Lobos. Along the road we could not resist this pretty rock formation.

Cañon del Rio Lobos

This gorgeous canyon is on the road from San Leonardo de Yagüe to El Burgo de Osma.

The Canyon is an impressive limestone gorge, about 500 feet deep. We observed immense eagles with our binoculars, soaring all day in the thermals above the canyon.

El Burgo de Osma

The old bishopstown El Burgo de Osma lies a 100 miles north of Madrid. Founded by the West-Ghotes it flourished in the 16th century.

The small Castillian town has a beautiful Plaza Mayor and the Cathedral square is zoomed with very old arcaded houses. The cathedral itself is considered one of the most important in Spain, due to its artistic value.
