Off-the-Shelf Lifters Under Revue

Comp Cams Lifter StylesCrane Cams Lifter Styles

In this section are listed various lifters which are presently under consideration.  It has been agreed that lifters with vertical link bars are the types we will aim for, as types with horizontal link bars will be more difficult to fit in the CIH head.

Mechanical roller lifters are available from companies like Competition CamsCrane Cams, and Crower Cams, all in the USA.

This information for the Comp Cams Lifters was taken from messages placed on the Opel Tuners Message Board by Roland Ermers & Dave Jackson in June 2001 (Original Message Sequence starting at http://members.boardhost.com/opeltuning/msg/3095.html).

A special thanks goes to Eric Thompson of the Cam Help team at Comp Cams for all his help in putting this information together.

Thanks to davegt27 for pointing out that Crower Cams also manufacture roller lifters.

Roller Lifter Comparison and Discussion

Manufacturer/Part No/Engine Sketch of Lifter in Head Comments
Kent Cams CF21 - Opel CIH Solid Lifter lifter_cih.jpg (64455 bytes) Sketch shows solid lifter cam with 32.0mm base circle.

The main lifter oil gallery is fed with oil at all times.

At base circle height (left), no oil is fed to rocker stud.

Oil is fed to rocker stud at full pressure of main lifter oil gallery from 3mm to 3.5mm of cam lift.

At full lift (right), no oil is fed to rocker stud.

The standard solid lifter is included here, so that comparisons can be made with the other lifters under revue.

Comp Cams #881 - Holden V8 Roller Lifter lifter_cc881.jpg (103806 bytes) Sketch shows roller cam with 22.0mm base circle.

At base circle height (left), main lifter oil gallery is fed with oil adequately.  Oil is fed to lower push rod cup at full pressure of main lifter oil gallery, but feed stops above 1.5mm of cam lift.

Oil is fed to rocker stud and rocker at full pressure of main lifter oil gallery from 5mm of cam lift to full lift.

At full lift (right), oil is still being fed along main lifter oil gallery, but at reduced flow.  No oil is fed to lower push rod cup.

Conclusion: We will have to restrict oil to the rocker stud and lower push rod cup or overall engine oil pressure could suffer, and the rocker gallery will receive too much oil.  Max cam lift is restricted to 10mm.  Max valve lift shown in sketch.  These lifters come with suitable link bars.  Overall height is acceptable, upper most point about 5mm above rocker stud at full lift.

Comp Cams #873 & #883 - Chevrolet V8 Roller Lifter lifter_cc873.jpg (113741 bytes) Sketch shows roller cam with 22.0mm base circle.

At base circle height (left), main lifter oil gallery is fed with oil adequately.  No oil is fed to lower push rod cup.

Oil is fed to lower pushrod cup from 5mm of lift to 7.5mm of lift.  Oil is fed to rocker stud and rocker at full pressure of main lifter oil gallery from 5mm of cam lift to full lift.

At full lift (right), oil is still being fed along main lifter oil gallery, at more reduced flow than for lifter #881.  No oil is fed to lower push rod cup.

Conclusion: We will have to restrict oil to the rocker stud, or overall engine oil pressure could suffer, and the rocker gallery will receive too much oil.  Max cam lift is restricted to 10mm.  Max valve lift shown in sketch.  These lifters do not come with suitable link bars.  Link bar #829 can be purchased as a separate item.  Overall height may be a problem, upper most point about 13mm above rocker stud at full lift.

Comp Cams #894C - Special Roller Lifter lifter_cc894c.jpg (94060 bytes) Sketch shows roller cam with 22.0mm base circle.  All dimensions same as #873 & #883, except that link bar riser is 8mm shorter.

Conclusion: We will have to restrict oil to the rocker stud or overall engine oil pressure could suffer, and the rocker gallery will receive too much oil.  Max cam lift is restricted to 10mm.  Max valve lift shown in sketch.  These lifters are sold as single items.  They do not come with a link bar.  Link bar #829-L can be purchased as a separate item.  Overall height is acceptable, upper most point about 5mm above rocker stud at full lift.

This lifter requires a groove in the lifter bore, which is used to maintain alignment.  A drill rig (#66575) is available so that grooves can be cut in the lifter bores.  These roller lifters only weigh 97g each.

The main lifter oil gallery is fed with oil at all times.

Awaiting further details about oil supply to pushrod cup.

No oil is fed to the rocker stud at any time.  It will be necessary to bore a hole through the body of the lifter, to the lifter oil gallery feed hole, which runs through the middle of the lifter.  Its height above the will determine the quantity of oil supplied to the rocker stud.
