Oghamics at Cerro
Polilla , Amambay , Conception, Alto Paraguay

In 1975 Dr. Fell already mentioned
in ESOP that there was Ogam in Paraguay :
http://www.equinox-project.com/v22087.htm
Indeed :
At Cerro Polilla, Paraguay, many Ogam like
inscriptions were found on a rocky little mountain with cave.
After analysis of new token digital fotos by
researchers in Paraguay, the Ogam inscriptions are under prequalification.
Also in Amambay Oghamics were found, and
remarkable ones near Conception. Qualification as Ogam is asked
to several worldwide top specialist before we
can speak of eventual translations.
Ogam is an alphabet and maybe
used for several languages : Irish Celtic
Danelaw Ogam , Proto Celtic , Punic Ogam , Lybyan - Ogam , native Ogam ?
On Viewzone an automatic Ogam translator ( http://www.viewzone.com/ogam22/ ) for
Bask is given by Edo Nyland ;
if we put in the first foto of Conception
copy rights Prof. Pistilli, Ascension,
Paraguay, website :
http://users.telenet.be/kenneshugo/Cerro%20Polilla.htm
We get on :
http://www.viewzone.com/ogam22/ the outcoming results :
ADO___*ADO- courage, bravery, stimulate, agree,
worship (? )
OGE___*OGE-
bed (?) , 20, 30
EHO___*EHO- to grind, milling, to digest,
molar, grave digger, burial (?)
But are the several Saharan/Bask roots, composed within a word , still the evolved
meaning of a word in a later given language ?
(opinion webmaster )
The later language involved maybe also Old
Celtic dating from either the Bronze Age to the Iron Age ?
That is, from the fourth to the first
millennium B.C. This language is older than Latin, classical Greek and
Sanskrit.
This is a sister language of Danubian,
Cimmerian, Italic and Tocharian languages.
This contributed to the creation of Higher
Danubian Germanic dialects to the North.
This explains the possible spread of archane or Proto-Oghams across Eurasia and
America ?
(remarks I received from an outstanding Ogam
researcher , after first look and qualification of some Ogamlikes of
Paraguay)
Other top researchers wrote me that none Ogam
meaningfull configurations are present in most Paraguyan Ogamlikes.
The general remark was also that a lot of
glyphs are already to much eroded to be sure of a valid decoding.
I guess, the language involved is
probably Irisch-Celtic ( Gaelic ) from the
Danelaw period and Viking occupation, Vikings having
colonies in North and South
America ,under which extensive colonies in Paraguay ?
All of course depends on a
clearly dating of most Ogam glyphs ; generally a scientific dating with latest
methods is absent.
In the book Vikingos en America
of Prof. Pistilli, this Gaelic, very logical point of view, is supposed.

The Sun Wheel Idea.
Cerro Polilla is an extremely fascinating
site! My opinion is that there is good
chance that some of the marks are ogham. It is also my observation that much of
it might NOT be ogham, as there does not seem to be grouping, but just long
rows of slashes.
This does not make the marks any less
important! They were measuring something. Usually it is the sun's position, as
i mentioned before. However, do not discount constellations (stars) or lunar
watching. They may have been using the Sun's position over time to measure
ground-length... to measure fathoms, cubits, el's, other standards. The sun
might tell them how long to make their ropes, how far apart to tie their knots
for navigation. All built on standard of the Sun's travel-distance over given
time-factor.
In that case, look on the ground, in the
bedrock of the site. Look for a hole, like a post-hole or shaft to hold a
timber or pole. Many such holes are mis-labeled as grinding mortars for maize,
roots or nuts. The holes could have held a pole to act as an exact gnomen. The
Sun, casting it's shadow, like spokes on a wheel. A giant Sunwheel measuring
out the uniform units for archetecture, navigation, astronomical degrees.
In one picture, the sunlight is casting at an
angle across the surface of the stone, picking out notches and ledges. If it is
Ogham, then there are three stemlines to confuse all the cross-slashes. It may
be that the horizontal lines on that panel are supposed to catch the Sun's
advance in special ways. Perhaps the SUN makes the lines readable. One does not
read the rock, but read the LIGHT as it rests on one area at a time. Because of
the shape of the stone, only some lines will be illuminated at one time. The
Light might be the secret to revelation.
Of course, coordinate the "auspicious
days" i listed before.

With some Cerro Polilla pictures before me, i
cannot leave the idea alone and not tell you what i see.
Find attached a very ugly little sketch. I am
forced at this time to use the "Paint" version on my laptop. It is a
very crude image maker. Usually i have good skill when i am in Photoshop
(Macintosh). Hopefully you can make sense of what i am trying to say by
drawing. The "Sun Wheel" in my mind is one of light and shadow. I
have selected to sketch the lines i see in one of your pictures as example.
In that picture, i see a ship with main mast
and people/oars uplifted. The figures in the boat may be represented by
proto-semitic (old style script) letters. Therefor, the "boat" may be
a message and picture in one. A Rebus. The ancient term "Sun Boat"
might be applicable.
I have chosen that panel to sketch, as it is so
very distinct, you know which one i am showing, even if i make a terrible
drawing of it. I do not pretend to guess that there is a hole in the rock there
in front of that certain assortment. The point is to look for ANY hole in the
rock, anywhere on the site, that might have supported a post or even a slender
staff.
As the Sun appeared at dawn, the shadow would
cast across the carving in the perfect way.
As the Sun went higher, the shadow spoke would
swing across the panel to indicate a new position. Higher yet, and the Sun
would cast a shorter shadow further over on the wall.
These spokes from the post would be the basis
of the "Wheel" i am inferring might be there. The post or staff would
be the phallic shaft in the fertility rites. The center of the Sun Wheel. The
Wheel i refer to is not carved on the rock in marks, it is made of Light and
Shadow.
***************************************************************************************************************************
The drawing and explanation of a 'Sun Wheel' as
i think of it, is just a theory, because i cannot be there to see the ground.
Do not confuse my suggestion to look for
hole(s) in the flat ground with the cupoules carved on the vertical surfaces of
the rock-face. I do not speculate, in any way, that sticks or rods were being placed
on the face of the rock. Those cups are far too shallow to hold a rod or stick
in a firm position that would not change, use to use. The cupoules on the
rockface would be for libations, offerings of water, blood, chinche, wine,
sacred dusts, herbs or pollens.
If my Sun Wheel theory is correct, the holes to
watch for are under your feet. Perhaps covered by a slight layer of soil or
filled in with humus. The holes that would be used for this sort of
registration will be exact and sharp edged, like a food can, straight. That way
the post, staff or rod will always be in the same alignment for the next time
it was used. You will find, perhaps, they were drilled using sand and water,
not chipped or cut with instruments.
***************************************************************************************************************************
Other Similar Approach Examples on website :
http://www.chargedbarticle.org/Two%20Ogams.htm
in order to cast a shadow confirms my own
speculation
about the "Sun Wheel" idea... except
the shadow might
fall upon a wall, not the flat of the ground,
also.

Altar at top of rock :
Detail petroglyph altar
There are runes in the basin just at water
level. Is there any chance that they were
registration notations for REFLECTIONS of Sun
or Moon on the water? When the
reflection of a celestial light as seen in the
water, lined up with a Rune, did that say something about Time and Direction?
Is there an obvious place to be standing to observe the basin, and wait for the
proper alignment of Viewer, Sun and Rune?
General Info on OGAM
(received from Christine Patenaude, USA)
There are three major camps of thought about
origins of Ogham.
All three groups agree that it began as a
Shaman's secret hand-sign code system
in order to flash messages to each other
silently. One finger up, three fingers down,
all five flashed up and down with a wrist
motion, etc. With practice, this kind of communication can become quite fluent,
as any deaf-mute community can show.
Then Ogham's development moved to marks on
sticks or rocks. Epigraphy. It was easy to make in straight marks in sand, wood
or stone. Still, it was considered Initiate Knowledge shared and taught amongst
mythos-holding priest-class people. By the time paper or vellum was more
available to scribes, more complex Runes were being developed. The runes and
alphabets were also considered sacred and secret ways to save and use
Knowledge. In English, we still use the word "Spell" to mean 'common
letters in a word', or to cast a sorcerer's chant or power.
Some historians and linguists think the writing
system described is actually fairly
recent in history... perhaps just before
medieval era. Not even BCE. These people believe Ogham was invented in
Gaul-Germany and southern Scandia, then spread to the British Isles. They have a hard time accepting Ogham seen
anywhere else in the world actually is Ogham. I am sorry for them. Their
worldview must be very small.
A second group would like to show that Ogham began in late Iron Age,
about 500-300 BCE. Again, with the same graduation from hand-sign to carving to
writing on paper, but with much farther reaching range of occurance. There was
time for the Mediterranean Mariner Nations to come visiting Scandinavia and
Germany to find and learn the technique. In some theories, Ogham was spread
more by the Levant traffic into the Mediterranean, than Gaelic or Celtic
travelers. Certainly, the buck-naked Celtic sailors had a terrific reputation as sailors and strong warriors. But when they got going in
the Mediterranean, their own script was there being used as a bridge between
foriegn languages, because Ogham was so easy to learn instead of complex
alphabets of each different Nation.
So one can find Ogham anywhere, and in either kind of language,
Celtic/Gaelic or Old Semitic root words.
The third radical camp is from Barry Fell himself. He observed that
Ogham was found in North Africa often enough to wonder if it did not start
there. His speculation was disabled in those years because there was no exact
way to tell how old an inscription was. There was not the technology to take
powerful microscopes into mobile mode and look at the inscriptions in place.
Now geologists like Scott Wolter can do this. The actual surface of the stone
can be seen in magnification which reveals the very single-crystal structure of
the rock-sand-substance. We can now tell how old an inscription is by comparing
to known age of weathered surfaces in the same area.
Barry Fell did not have that option. He observed ogham in N.Africa. He
saw Ogham in Scandinavia which was dated by earlier geologists at 2000 BCE.
Barry did not have the technology to tell which came first, the Chicken or the
Egg. The earlier geologists did not have that technology to make scientific
conclusions. Personally, i believe the geologists were probably incorrect to
say the Scandinavian petroglyphs were 4000 yrs old. Those carvings should be
re-assessed with the new technology.
Barry Fell was convinced ogham started in Africa and moved to northern
Europe. That was his pet theory, his personal opinion. But to my mind, he did
not have scientific reason or proof to draw those conclusions. There was plenty
of world sailing ever since 500 BCE to bring Ogham from Europe and Ireland into
the Mediterranean and become a trade-alphabet in between all languages. There
was plenty of time for it to be spread around on rocks and pottery to be found
later, before the other Alphabets became more promenant and Ogham was dropped.
So personally, i think i belong to the middle camp. There would seem to
be a much deeper history to the script than only the Vikings. But there hasn't
been definitive evidence that it is as old as Barry Fell hoped. There is a
famous petroglyph site at Peterborough Ontario, in Canada. Fell featured it in
his book Bronze Age America. (He did not name the book to say Bronze was being
made and used in America, but to describe what was going on in this continent
at the time of the Old World bronze age.)
Because Barry Fell was convinced that the petroglyphs he used as a
'constant' (the ones in Scandinavia with the 4000 yr-old dating) were of such
great age... when he saw the same kinds of glyphs and symbols in North America,
he made the incorrect assumption that those Canadian marks were also 2000 BCE.
In one comment in the book, he uncovered his own weakness in his theory. He
remarked with awe that the ancient authors were using words and symbols still
in use just before the Vikings. It did not occur to him that the petroglyphs
matched 300 AD signs because they WERE from 300 AD, not 2000 BCE. He was so
convinced of his own logic that he would not try to see the material from any
other angle.
Much of what Fell wrote was 'spot on' and phenomenally intuitive,
accurate and leaps ahead of his generation. Much of the Diffusion Community
take most of his ideas as Gospel. But he was human. He was a pioneer. Not all
first adventurers into a new territory get the first maps right. My own opinion
was that Barry got some bad data and it disabled the rest of his theory, in the
case of Ogham origins. Until better science proves different, I will stick to
the European origins of Ogham in late Iron Age; and be happy to find it
anywhere else in the world with just as much excitement.
P.S. Barry's book title was not so very far off after all. Bronze HAS
been found in ancient Mayan and Andean tombs... usually as ornate warclubs. Now
one must find out, did the Olmec, Maya and the Moche make their own bronze? or
trade for them from the Chinese in 400 BCE ??
