Last known status: Partly destroyed, complete destruction imminent
Of
the three Carcoke factories Marly was shut down first, it was 1993
when the last cokes were pushed out of the furnaces. Part of Carcoke
Marly was destroyed some years ago and december 2003 was going to
be the final chapter. Carcoke Marly was fighting back however: In
the first week of demolition one of the scrubbers caught fire and
one week later the fire was still burning and smoke was still bellowing
out of the scrubbers. The smoke was believed to be harmless at first
but when the fire was finally put out it appeared that there were
traces of carcinogenic hydrocarbons in the smoke. No wonder if you
know that these scrubbers were used to absorb the hydrocarbons out
of the gas that is given off by pyrolysis of the coal.
