The history of this cokes plant goes way back to 1900 but most of
the buildings
that you can find here today date from 1929. The oldest 50 cokes-furnaces
that are still on the site date from 1928 and were used until 1958.
In 1956 and 1959 two more modern furnace batteries of respectively
25 OTTO and 35 CGCF furnaces were built. They were used until the
30th of may 1996 when the last battery of furnaces was shut down.
Since that day a slow decay has been going on and this place has
become a beautiful industrial ruin. At my last visit I noticed brand
new warning signs all over the site, a bad omen that indicates the
imminent destruction of Carcoke Zeebrugge.
