Images are not only attractive to use on your website, they can also improve your seo if you use them properly.
If you don't have room on your web site for pictures you can always use little squares like I did and place keywords in the alt- and title-tag.
I'm not telling you a huge secret when I advice you to use the ALT-tag but Firefox doesn't show alt-tags. You'll have to use the TITLE-tag in stead. I also use both.
Internet users are constantly looking for images online via Google, MSN, Yahoo and other search engines. It’s important to use keywords in the file names of your images ex. seo-webdesign.jpg so your site will appear in image search results. Also use keywords for the map name of your images ex. /webdesign/seo.png in stead of /images/seo.png
Use common filetypes like .jpg .png .gif and adjust the size of the files to the size of the webspace.
To make sure your site is a valid W3c site don't forget the slash (/) at the end of the img-tag.
Adding captions to a picture is also useful, as it gives context to that image. Newspapers have used this technique for years. It's also useful to ensure that the image is surrounded by content discussing the content of the image. So, if your text is about seo, be sure your image is appropriately tagged and in or around your text.
