We will try to describethe most commonly used functions of the keys on the keyboard. Typewriter Keys ) SThe keys are arranged just like those on a typewriterand are used the same way. The Enter Key B The Enter key usually works like a Carriage Return; it moves the cursor (the blinking underscore) to the start of a new line. In addition, programs often use the Enter key to tell the computer to start doing something. The Caps Lock Key > }The Caps Lock key switches the letter keys from lowercase to uppercase and back again each time it is pressed. Go ahead, give the Caps Lock key a try! When you're through, press PgDn to continue. The Screen Control and Cursor Keys -$ uThe cursor is a blinking underscore that shows you where you will type next. These keys allow you to control the cursor and move it around the screen. The Numeric Keypad Cursor Keys 1 xLike the keys on the previous page, these keys can also be used to control the cursor and move it around the screen. The only difference is that these keys can also be used to type numbers. <Press PgDn to see how this is done. y The Numeric Keypad and the Num Lock Key () pThe Num Lock key switches these keys from Cursor keys to Number keys and back again each time it is pressed. The keypad is arranged like a calculator to save time when you type lots of numbers. GGive the Num Lock key a try! Then press PgDn to continue. d The Function Keys ( SThe twelve function keys are multi-purpose keys. Whateach key does depends on the program that you are using. The function of each key, if any, is often labeled on the screen. / Modifier Keys . XThe Control (Ctrl) and Alternate (Alt) keys are normallyused in conjunction with other keys. They work like Shift keys to modify one key at a time. Before you turn on your printer, turn the knob clockwise until the print head is positio ned just below the perforation of a new form. This location is often called the Top Of Form or TOF. Now turn on the Printer. Notice that the Power and Ready lights are now lit. The Ready light shows that the printer is ready to receive instructions from your computer. Now press the Online switch once. Notice that the Ready light went out. If you press the Online switch during printing, most programs will stop the printer and wait for you to press the Online switch once more. Press the Line Feed switch once. Notice that the paper advanced one line. Try it again if you want. When the printer is Online, the Line Feed switch does not work. The Ready light must be OFF for the Line Feed switch to work. Now try the Form Feed switch once. Form Feed advances the paper from its current position to the top of the next form. It's quite handy. Like the Line Feed switch, the Form Feed switch will not work when the printer is Online. The Ready light must be OFF before the Form Feed switch will work. Let's try some printing. Diskette drives are available in different capacities. For example, a High Capacity Drive can store about 1,200,000 Characters of data on a diskette. F i x e d D i s k D r i v e 0! uIf your computer has a fixed disk you can use it to record large amounts of data. The disk is sealed, so you can't change disks the way that you can diskettes. The fixed disk reads and writes much more quickly than a diskette drive. The flashing indicator tells you that the fixed disk drive is in use. The key lock enables you to lock your system for security. D r i v e N a m e s 0 gEach drive installed has a letter associated with it. The drives shown below are named Drive A and Drive B. The names must be short, no more thaneight letters. A few names have special meanings, but otherwise you can use any name you like.
