Sillis, what's in a name...

The name Sillis originates, as far as my ancestors are concerned, from the names Gillis and/or Dielis, due to a slip of the tongue or a slip of the pen in a baptismal register in Schelle (province of Antwerp on the river the Scheldt) in 1725. As far as I know about 250 people with the same name are living now in Flanders-Belgium.

Three family trees are known: one in the Antwerp area, a second in Duffel (province of Antwerp) and a third around Hamme (province of East Flanders) with a branch in (West Flanders). Beyond that families with the same name exist in England, the USA, Australia, New-Zealand and Germany. In England and the USA the name seems to be derived from Sealis (since 1581).

In Finland the word Sillis means something totaly different: "sillis" is a breakfast after a big party, involving the consumation of "sill" (better known as herring).
