This book is the first NLP novel. Even though the link of this book with NLP is not clear to me, it's a book that I enjoy having. Some parts are really intriguing. I've been using some of the stories embedded in the book as metaphors ever since I got the book.
"The Carnival" is an story that is aimed at teach children about NLP. It includes eye movements, meta model questions and even submodalities, all in the setting of a carnival (the other NLP elements are yours to discover). The dialogue that the children exchange reminds parents of the "difficult" questions children start asking when they are 5, and reminds NLP-ers of the days of learning the meta-model.
A short booklet of 12 pages that explains the polarity response and how to deal with it. The booklet is packed with examples that show that the author is an expert in the topic. If you have to deal with persons that never do what you want, this publication can help you understand. If you are a polarity responder, you cannot buy this! :-)
This book is original in its approach. It shows us how the author has integrated NLP with various other models and how he applies the result throughout several contexts he lives in. Since this was the aim of the book (as can be read on the back cover), you can call the book a success! I can recommend the book to anyone needing a prompt for integrating NLP in one's live.
Another original book: Rather than getting a text, you get a set of hints consisting of steps to get your message across. Each page has been designed as a poster: enlarging it would result in a text you could put on display. As far as the content goes, the approach has been to split the material into 39 topics, most are clearly inspired by NLP. Each topic is stressed with famous quotes from Stalin, Freud, Bateson, Watzlawick and many others. You also get 41 drawings, which illustrate each topic, so that you get the picture as well. .
The book contains a story tale of about 95 pages (small book size, large print). I bought it out of curiosity, rather than for it's value to NLP. It is Richards first published fiction, even though he started writing it in 1975. Possible uses (according to the back flap): tell it like any other tale, read it for fun, or study the complexities of language.
This book is a collection of papers around 4 topics: Hypnosis and NLP, Healing and NLP, Artistry and NLP and New Ground. The editors selected the papers and wrote an introduction to each section. The papers show what discoveries well-trained NLP-ers are making when they apply their knowledge.
A Dutch NLP book (as you understood if you could read the title).
The book is in fact a collection of papers written by 3 of the best known Dutch NLP trainers.

Emotional Intelligence,
Daniel Goleman, Bantam Books, 1995, ISBN:
0-55337-506-7 (Dutch Translation published by Uitgeverij Contact in 1996, ISBN: 90-254-0669-6) Check out this book at Amazon.com The main message of this book is that EQ matters a lot and that the American education system has a lot of work to do in this area to educate the next generation. |
Goleman is well known in the US, mainly because he has been writing about Psychology for ages. He was chief of the redaction of Psychology Today and writes for the New York Times. Somehow, this helped him to make his 13nd book (or something like that) a success. By June 1998, this book has sold over 4 million copies and has been translated in 24 languages.
To bad Goleman forgot about NLP in his book. Especially since Brian Van der Horst claims that Goleman followed some basic NLP training back in the Seventies...Read an extended review on my web site on "Emotional Intelligence".

Working
with Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman,
Bantam Books, October 1998, ISBN 0-553-10462-4 Well, you believe
EQ is important? Want to know it's effects on the
business world? Then read this book! |
This book is about
emotional competencies - a good choice, given the current
interest for competence management in the business world
(a trend "created the 1994 bestseller "Competing
for the Future" by Gary Hamel & C.K.
Prahalad).
In chapter 2, Goleman defines an Emotional Competence as
"a learned capability based on emotional
intelligence that results in outstanding performance at
work". He then links this definition to the
definition of emotional intelligence and goes on to
present his framework which he distilled from the books
mentioned further in this review. In chapter 3, "A
Hard Case for Soft Skills", Goleman defends the
importance of emotional competencies in a business
environment. Chapters 4 till 9 form the body of the book
(180 pages). They expand on the model and try to explain
(rather clumsily) what Goleman means with the terms he
used to "name" his 25 emotional competencies.
In the final part of the book (chapter 10 till 13),
Goleman needs 80 pages to explain how he thinks learning
should be arranged for obtaining these 25 competencies.
This section is largely based on the work of "The Consortium for Research on Emotional
Intelligence in Organizations,
which published a report on how to teach these
competencies (you can download several reports from the
consortium's website!). Goleman was one of the 9 members
of this committee, all members had Ph.D.'s.
As a conclusion, I'd like to say that I like the structure
of this book and the route to emotional intelligence it
points out. For me, it seems that these are the results
of the Consortium mentioned above (and free to download).
This book aims to give a body of examples to this
framework. Too bad that the route itself and the
competencies haven't been worked out in enough detail in
this book... Again, as with Goleman's first book, I see a
lot of opportunities to write a "hands-on" book
or a self-help book on how to develop these competencies.
How original is this book?
Goleman seems to have had a hard time
writing this book. The first time I heard it being
announced was in October 1997 and it took him till
October 1998 to get it published? It seems as if I
ordered my copy from Amazon.com "ages" before
the release date... Could Goleman have suffered of
"writer's block?" If so, it seems others
"helped" him finally to overcome it... My guess
for explaining the publishing date is that the committee
mentioned above didn't reach it's conclusions earlier...
Anyway, Goleman's book is again quite well documented (42
pages of references and footnotes). The references and
the acknowledgements show that he is honest about
borrowing ideas from other people. The question is:
didn't he overdo the borrowing? At several places in the
book, it sure did look familiar to me! He cites some 32
times from a book by Lyle M. Spencer Jr. & Signe M.
Spencer: "Competence at work: Models for
Superior Performance" (John Wiley & Sons,
1993) - taking over models, examples - and also refers to
other research they did (other publications) - he
probably "discovered" and discussed this
material while part of the committee mentioned above. He
cites about 21 times from Richard Boyatzis: "The
Competent Manager: A model for Effective
Performance" (John Wiley & Sons, 1982), but
then now this person is working with Goleman on a new EQ
measurement instrument. Another books Goleman read full
interest (9 quotes) is Robert E. Kelly's "How to
Be a Star at Work: Nine Breakthrough Strategies You Need
to Succeed"(Time Business, 1998) where a
commercial quote of Goleman can be found on the cover (in
exchange for his borrowing??). Don't shoot me if these
number aren't completely correct: I think I missed
some... Other books Goleman "recommends"
include "Emotional Contagion" by
Eliane Hatfield et al. and Richard. H. Rosier's "The
Competency Model Handbook (3 volumes) - Lexington,
MA: Linkage: 1994-1996".
