NLP Community Leadership Conference and Workshop
Questionnaire Compilation

May 1997 Purpose: To explore NLP's mission and vision of the path to the next millenium.

1. What are some quotations that you feel provide guidance and/or motivation to create a healthy community and a positive future?

"Never regard your study as a duty, but as an enviable opportunity, the enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating influence of beauty in the realm of the spirit for your own personal joy and for the profit of the community to which your later work belongs." Albert Einstein, in a message to students at Princeton.

"The years of searching in the dark for a truth that one feels but cannot express, the intense desire, and the alternations of confidence and misgivings until one breaks through to clarity and understanding are known only to him who has himself experienced them." Albert Einstein.

"The future is not a result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but a place that is created -- created first in the mind and will, created next in activity. The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made; and the activity of making them changes both the maker and the destination." --John Schaar

"A million candles can be lit from a single flame. All men should try to learn before they die..what they are running from, and to, and why." --James Thurber

"When we think about the future of the world, we always have in mind its being at the place where it would be if it continued to move as we see it moving now. We do not realize that it moves not in a straight line, but in a curve, and that its direction constantly changes." --Richard Rorty, Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature

"When I pronounce the word Future, the first syllable already belongs to the past. When I pronounce the word Silence, I destroy it. When I pronounce the word Nothing, I make something no nonbeing can hold." --Wislawa Szymborska (1996 Nobel Prize recipient in Literature)

2 What is a metaphor, symbol or image that you feel represents the evolution of NLP, its direction for the future, and its role in the larger community?

Globe with a band of growing energy sweeping the planet.

A diamond dropped into a pool on a windy day.

A catalyst for metasystemic change.

* NLP is like the web of a spider: Connecting things in a way they weren't connected before, resulting in a models oriented towards the structure.

Water...It is a simple molecule, H20. It is natural. It interacts with other elements in life. It brings richness to life, actually water brings life to life. It changes form, manifests itself in the most approprite way like vapor, rain, a drop in a waterfall, white snowflake...and we must do anything and everything to keep it clean and available and enrich it.

As the piano softly began to play, they carefully and with hesitation took their first steps. At first they felt awkward and clumsy, however, as they continued and guitars and the drums joined the piano, their bodies felt light and easy and became smoother and smoother. And gradually as they kept rehearsing the steps, the orchestra expanded into a full symphony orchestra, making the dance even more intense. Looking forward they now noticed that one by one people from the audience came to the stage, where they had been dancing solely, and began to join them -- each of them with their own rythmic movements.

A journey into 3 phases:
The rebel -- not knowing its place in the world, preconventional.
The grown-up -- adjusting and finding its own place and pace in the world, conventional.
The age of wisdom -- contributing to the society at large -- finding its own rythm in accordance to a larger whole, post-conventional.

Tree with deep roots and many brances, growing in natural patterns, spreading into being a forest. (especially like the Kauri trees in New Zealand. First stage of growth looks similar to other trees, second stage is the spreading of branches above the rest of the forest, "a crown," and just a strong trunk below. The onld ones -- 700+ years -- are majestic, with names like "lord of the forest."

The Inca Medicine Wheel (spiral model of time), in which we return to our place on the medicine wheel but at a new and more evolved level.

Coyote. Nelson Zink writes, "Stories are told of Coyote's strange craving for watermelon. If there are watermelons growing in the neighborhood, Coyote will get his share. We knew an old melon grower in McElmo Canyon in Southwestern Colorado who, after 30 years, finally gave up trying to keep Coyote out of his patch. He just grew more, enough for him and Coyote. Coyote has a simple foolproof algorithm. And it works for everything:

  1. Get real clear about what you want.
  2. Have enough sense (and peripheral acuity) to notice what works.
  3. Keep trying something different, outrageous if necessary.
  4. Remember and understand how you were finally successful.

Or: "Wits -- Awareness -- Courage -- Skill."
If you doubt this, try keeping Coyote out of your patch. The watermelon dreams of Coyote are powerful stuff!

Butterfly emerging in all its beauty.

An angel touching a healing with the magic want of NLP.

Johnny Appleseed...explanation was very long, see attachment.

Many treasures have been collected and they are available to those who are ready to "treasure" them (picture of "NLP Treasure Chest").

3. What global trends will continue on into the next millenium?

The global communication via the Internet and satellite TV The interest in alternative therapies since the cost of health care will continue to rise. More interest in the preventive approach to health The need to quickly develop new skills in a rapidly changing world Increasing speed of technology Increasing amount of data/information Wider gap between rich/poor, have/have not Economic emergence of Pacific Rim

Fluidity and breakdown of traditional family Explosive change Increasing complexity Megathreats to survival Data pollution Political and economic instability Values conflicts

Increase of smaller business units (current trends like "Agile organizations")

Virtual organizations, requiring more communication and networking

The Wisdom of Teams
Importance of learningThe only constant is changeThe learning organization.
Getting knowledge out of data (given the ever-increasing amount of
information out there)
The world is getting smaller (Internet, the virtual community).

More questioning of religion and its power. Need for more space (physicaVemotional) for individuals. Growing nationalism due to inapproprite applications of globalization concept. More questioning on consensus versus inclusiveness, autocracy vs. democracy. Increase in cross-cultural interaction.

A quest for meaning and purpose. Short-term or brief therapy -- simple, fast. The importance of ecology of our planet. A more global world perspective and the counter examples of this -- a large social world conflict.

Networked worldwide communication, increasing pace & mobility. Split between those who have access and those who don't. Isolation/connection forces creating tension for individuals, family, community, society. Unification of world economy. People learning about"inner space."

Continuing and accelerating impact of the "baby boomers" as regards:

  1. Interest in spiritual growth and existential issues;
  2. Interest in personal health and longevity;
  3. Increased free time by affluent early retirees resulting in greater utilization of recreational resources and educational resources;
  4. Other economic trends as outlined in the book "Age Wave."

Increased world population growth and resultant resource scarcity. Increased life expectancy and quality of life for the affluent. Continued biosphere deterioration, including emergence of new diseases. Increased electronic connectivity, including video conference via Internet.

Opening up of trade Continual movement towards capitalism Increase awareness of intuition/the unconscious Concern about the environment Being held accountable for ????, the environment, budget, etc. Global warming and decrease of natural resources.

It will become increasingly more difficult to take action that is counter to the flow of life and it will be increasingly more difficult to have inaction that is counter to the flow of life. This hsould make it an interesting time in our world. It will not be an easy time for many so anticipating the amount of change and being able to help facilitate the change will be necessary.

Access to the ability to receive and disseminate information will grow at an exponential rate, and the speed at which information can be shared will continue to accelerate. I'll offer an example: Satellite technology has justnow become available to Internet users. The fiber optics of the telecommunications technology is fast at downloading words on the Internet, but slow at downloading pictures. With the new satellite technology, complex picture and graphics can be downloaded as rapidly as words. The trend for more information, delivered more rapidly will continue to play an important role in the beginning stages of the next millenium.

War Poverty Hunger Power hungry aggressors Abuse Murder

I understand them from the popular media..I see lots of (isms) -- racism, sexism, havism and have notism...I see these trends of wanting to be different and better than some other group (I saw some show on PBS this year where they were identifying common traits of humanity, one of these was the tendency toward groups, my group and the other group. This has been present for ages.). We see the importance of identity and connection with others manifesting in gangs, racism, wars, and the like.

One area fruitful for improvement is that of difference in the context of identity and connection to others...the two highest levels of change as usually presented. The evening news shows are full of difficulties in this area on the individual level (an 18 year old mother with her newborn saying "He always pees on me..I'm stumbling around in the middle of the night to get him a bottle..I don't want to say I should have waited but...), the group level (gang activities found any day of the week in any newspaper in -the US), the national level (Serbs, Croats; Jews, Arabs; Chinese and any other country), and species (humans are more important than any other species).

The communication between people while simultaneously communication technology advances. Issues about aging and health. Diversity -- multi-cultural communication.

Unlimited access to information for many people, for many others, falling farther behind in access to resources.

Continuation of North American cultural domination and the world will get both the good & bad sides of this.

4. What is needed to effectively deal with these trends?

Know how to communicate effectively via the Internet Package and adopt NLP to various market segments We need to develop a worldwide network that will enable us to communicate our message We also need a unifying vision so we will be with "the force."

Ability to tolerate ambiguity Ability to sort information from data (i.e., outcome and values/vision) Compassion

The competence and organization to manage complexity Rethinking all of our social institutions Re-creating society Requisite variety Synthesis Information management

Communication skills, leadership skills, and modelling skills. (Skills may not be the right word, it should involve all logical levels).

Awareness and respect of the parts as well as the whole. Respect to the unique value in each and very person.

Ability to be flexible in thinking styles to revisit the understandings of some terms like: Control, power, openness, politics, love, urgency, time, ownership. Alignment in logical levels, especially awareness of beliefs and values. Appreciation of continuous and dynamic learning.

The ability to think systemically
A constant updating of your infor(e.g., education, internet)
A lifeline to de-center and re-center again on a new level (NLP as a lifeline?)

Learning, learning, learning. Skills for community. Spiritual awareness Self-responsibility.

Identifying and developing eductaional materials and programs to assist people with spiritual, health, and peronal growth issues.
Training practitionres capable of assisting with the above-mentioned items
Development of credentialling mechanism & supervised "clinical training program" in NLP skills.
Training and equipping NLP trainers in computer skills.
Development of documented research related to efficacy and indications for NLP-based therapies.

Ways of thinking which are creative, generative, and systemic Focus and processes for learning how to learn. Ability to embrace difference and find common ground Increased invulnerability/genuineness/presence

Creating safe space in communities (business, family, educational, social, geographical) so that change can occur.

Most Internet users utilize some system of "keywords" to search for information. Recently I went to the Internet and plugged in a keyword which I thought would not be all that common. The keyword was my surname "Munshaw." I almost immediately was inundated with page after page after page of information. What must be developed and will be, are "meta-keywords systems" which will frame the ways for which ifnormation is sorted. The systems which will flourish will be those which effectively pace and lead large numbers of people.

Personal transformation inside each person. Healing abilities and healing sociopaths.

Good question! Perhaps strategies for increasing acceptance of our humanity on a mass scale.

More opportunities for people to meet, discuss, process and learn quality skills.

Multi-way communication to promote exchanges and help get everyone the resources to communicate within and beyond their own communities. North Americans should become mor aware of our cultural presuppositions and those of others.

5. What is the path to the next millenium?

Perhaps establish a network of independent organizations that have integrity and share the same vision.

I don't know (yet).

Do some thinking Reconstruct the language Operate meta-systemically Continuous metasystemic monitoring

For the developers of NLP (NLP trainers and modellers) -- getting a deeper knowledge of communication (higher logical levels, reconnecting NLP to its roots) More communication among the NLP developers -- more academic publications Connecting elements from outside NLP with NLP (e.g., how to apply NLP given Business Process Reengineering, given Emotional Intelligence, given Learning Organization)... Hop the trends, show how to apply NLP frameworks to them. For the rest of the world: More trainings on NLP core values, beliefs and skills, but from an application perspective (instead of from a formal NLP education perspective).

Recognize that we are part of a larger system, and that system is part of another system, and so on Appreciate the value and richness in diversity and respect it's conveyance and contribution Develop a shared vision

A long and winding road
And a shorter one with thresholds -- that allows the traveller to shift paradigms.
But are we willing to let go the known and embrace the unknown.

The "path" irresistable flow and change

Meg Wheatley's book "A Simpler Way" Diverse paths

I don't know the path, but personally I am following a path with a heart. I think that major pathways include development of an inclusive for NPL. I think that this effort starts with this workshop, but will be "completed" in an ongoing way by the international NLP community.

Identifying and developing educational materials and programs to assist people with spiritual, health, and presonal growth issues. Training practitioners capable of assisting with the above mentioned items. Development of credentialling mechanism & a supervised "clinical training program" in NLP skills

For me to work with and influence myself -- have my life be a model, representation, of what I believe and choose to manifest specifically. I believe facilitating individual's thinking to discriminate limiting presupposition and change them to be supporting and multiple description; self-reflection and self-disclosure; making commitments and being held accountable to and for those commitments.

Getting into the flow of life because each year the current is stronger. As I read what I wrote above, I laugh, because I do so much business consulting I rarely talk about the "flow of life" and yet I feel it is our biggest trend.

"Path" is of course, a metaphor. The question posed presupposes a singular path, and also suggest those who take paths are moving toward something that is fixed -- the next millenium. I suggest that indeed we -- all of us -- are in flux or movement, and that the most flexible among us can choose and practice the greatest number of movements. In our flux, however, we are moving in all kinds of directions, and taking a variety of paths. So guess what?! The next millennium is going to find each and every one of us who lives to long, no matter what paths we have taken. Path to the next millenium? Ah yes, it is easier to sell the people a map than it is to offer them a compass! Might we not consier going into the compass business? The next millennium is not some secret treasure, lost city, or inaccessible domain to which a path must be found or created. It is a context, a special way of marketin time in very large chunks compared to the way we usually mark time. Thinking in terms of millennia can expand and enrich our maps. Most of us likely will be around to welcome the new millennium as it comes to us, and we shall dwell in its early days. Those headed in the directions of health, happiness, love, and self-expression will be in a position to enjoy and thrive in the next millenium.

A rocky one. One of hope, with NLP.

Probably lots of path, not one. Some questions:
What part of my personal mission has to do with the betterment of my community, country, and world?
What level of commitment am I willing to invest to make my community a place members want to belong?
How do I "share the wealth" on a group basis? What values do I believe will contribute to a better neighborhood?
How can I help support the emergence of these values in my house and my community?
So, perhaps, one element of this path has to do with what we as a community are prepared to do as both individuals and members of a larger community. The Christian churches like to suggest a 10% tithe. What might our community contribute to projects in their communities?

Knowing that there is more than one path.

Sorry, I haven't the faintest!

6. What are some examples of projects that reflect the mission of NLP along this path?

Programs for youth - both for young people who achieve and for those who struggle Programs for specific health concerns Programs for specific learning concerns The Community Leadership Project Any project that helps people think more systemically Any project that brings people closer to themselves (and therefore others)

"How to cope with electronic communication" -- a workshop that discusses the limitations of written communication (especially when applied to electronic communication, such as e-mail, forum discussions...). Exercises on separating observations from interpretation; exercises on the effct of missing information (less non-verbal communication, missing channels); degradation from normal discussion over phone conversation to e-mail, the effects of delay.

Dynamic Learning NLPU Publications This questionnaire

The development of the NLP practitioner from doing to being NLP as a social -- how does it fit in a larger social system?

The health projects you are involved in. Syntax bringing communication skills to broader audiences. I think Kelly Gerling & Charlie Sheppard have been working on leadership as well. Suzanne Bailey, Lara Ewing: On group process.

Clinical studies such as the Allergy Study.
Development of IASH
Development of an outcomes database for use by all NLP practitioners.
Demonstration projects for development of "community."
International NLP conferences.
Development of an NLP web-site for networking, information, etc.

The Teamworkability Program the Center for Professional Development offers to executives or corporations.

The differences we make in the business communities, geographic communities, health communities, family communities, spiritual communities and the one trend I see in all is the community (possibly a re-publishing of Anchor Point articles from over the years).

Certainly, the World Health Community is an example. It has a track record of creating a specific focus for NLPers and bringing new people to NLP (Particularly medical professionals) who might have taken longer to find their way. In the St. Louis area I am active in training educators to utilize the NLP Spelling Strategy. I term my work "Casting a Spell on Spelling" and utilize income from my NLP private practice, consulting, and training to be able to deliver the spelling work to educators at minimal cost to them.

Healing -- physical and mental.

An NLP institute developing a relationship with a local school, hospital, rape recovery center or the like and providing services to them with the help of participants in Practitioner and Master Practitioner programs. An NLP institute actively seeking members of groups not usually represented in their programs to participate in trainings. Explicating a value of "service."

I believe practitioner and master practitioner trainings do provide an ideal setting for assisting people in their path. I would expect the NLP World Health Organization to be reflecting the Mission of NLP toward a healthy aging society.

7. How can we develop our vision of our path to the next millennium? What is an exercise that would help people open up to the possibilities of the future?

Some of the Don Juan inspired exercises like "Waking Indian File" which develop the sense of collectedness. Something this big requires a trance.
