Note: Electronic meeting places tend to change quite fast. Maybe some have ceased to exist, and others have been born since the last update of this FAQ.

2.2.1. On CompuServe

I leave this information at the beginning of this section, as a tribute to NLP's on-line history. Of course, with the current evolution of the Internet, the former home of the NLP-community is only a remnant of it's glorious past.Also, due t some battles within the On-line community, the NLP community on CompuServe was forced to regroup on one forum (see history).

• MIND/BODY forum (moderated), section 12: "NLP/Learning Technology"; library section 5: "NLP/Hypnosis"
  The amount of mails in this newsgroup went down considerably in the last few months. It seems like the NLP-field doesn't need CompuServe anymore to sit around the table and share differences.

WARNING: This forum section is the last remaining one on NLP where NLP is the main topic. However, be attentive when you post messages to this forum: the forum sysops tend to bend the CompuServe rules to their advantage: they will claim the propriety of group-discussion for instance. So: don't put too much info in there if you want to use it afterwards in other places.

Information on Forum-operation on CompuServe:

Messages in the forums will typically be kept for about 10 to 15 days. However, if forum-activity gets higher, its is possible messages disappear earlier. It's also possible that the author of the message decides to delete it (although this is rarely done), or that the sysops of the forum take action (this did happen often in some periods).

Together with the message area's, there are also the library section. That is also a valuable source of information (e.g. for dates on seminars, etc). Check it out!

2.2.1.1. Some history

I want to keep this info in remembrance of what can happen to FREEDOM OF SPEECH!

During the weekend of 28 and 29 October 1995, a libel from a English lawyer claiming to defend Richard Bandler has resulted in definitely closing down the NLP-sections in the AI Expert Forum and in the New Age B forum. The libel concerned an article to be published in Germany, which was uploaded on both forums by Thies Stahl. The basis for the article was an interview with Bandler in Köln during September.
I highly regret this way of reacting of the Bandler clan, resulting in the limitation of freedom of speech. Other "defense" actions were possible, certainly since the current action causes more damage to the NLP Community than the damage Bandler can claim. The whole case shows a lot of resemblance to the actions taken by the Church of Scientology.

• AIEXPERT forum, section 10: "Neurolinguistic" (unmoderated).
  The oldest NLP electronic meeting place around was started by accident. NLP is also used as abbreviation for "Natural Language Processing". The section used to be called "NLP". Some NLP-ers in the Neurolinguistic sense of the word came alone, and took over the section. The sysop of AI Expert let this happen and supported the NLP community on-line, until the notorious weekend of October 1995.
  Probably the meeting place that was most frequented by NLP-trainers for years and that gave us absolute freedom. The NLP-documents I edit originated on that forum between '94 and '95!
• NEW AGE B forum, section 12: "NLP" (moderated)
  This section contained a few interesting messages from time to time.

2.2.2. On Internet

NewsGroups (USENET):

• alt.self-improve (often contains info about Tony Robbins)
• alt.psychology.nlp (unmoderated, dedicated to NLP only, abbreviation: APL)

The purpose of alt.psychology.nlp (as described in its FAQ) is twofold. First and foremost, APL is intended as a forum for NLP-practitioners to share and discuss information with each other. Second, APL is also a forum for presenting and representing the attitudes and skills of some of it's practitioners to the interested public. You can get old APL newsgroup messages from www.dejanews.com.

Websites (WWW) :

As the World Wide Web has been growing fast since 1996. It has becomes difficult to keep track of all NLP sites. Therefor, I just refer to the non-commercial sites and to some well known (oldest?) commercial sites in this document. You can find some more URL's of web-sites by reading my trainer lists: I included the URL's that I knew with the trainers that maintain them.

General

• http://www.nlp.com/NLP supervised by Stever Robbins. Apart from Merl's world, this is one of the biggest independent NLP sites on the web. It was also the first one, competing with Dale Kirby (see below). It still contains some information you won't find elsewhere.
• http://www.rain.org/~da5e/nlpfaq.html . Together with Stever and me, Dale Kirby's site originally ruled the Internet (as far as NLP is concerned). As the title indicates, it aims at being an FAQ for NLP. Recommended!
• http://www.lambent.com/joseph.htm : Visit the NLP and systems thinking pages from Joseph O'Connor. It includes articles, a modeling project library, resources, glossaries, jokes, metaphors and more.
• http://www3.mistral.co.uk/bradburyac/ -> Honest Abe's NLP Emporium. The site of Andy Bradbury started somewhere in 1997. He is an NLP Author with a good sense of humor who also did a considerable effort to publish a good NLP booklist (not as good as mine, of course)
• http://www.23NLPeople.com This site is a resource for NLP and Neurology. It contains information about NLP, Neurology and schizophrenia. The author calls It "a great site", but then of course, he is biased. Anyway, I found his collection of articles quite impressive.
• http://www.nlpiash.org : The NLP Web site for the Institute for the Advanced Studies of Health (IASH) is live since September 1997. And I must say it looks great!
• http://www.notenbomer.nl/nlp -> this link brings you to the homepage of a nice Dutch NLP site. From that page you can choose to access the Dutch spoken or the English spoken part of the site. The main advantage of this site is that it provides links to a lot of content about NLP (even if it is not on their site). For instance, they "collected" links to articles and book reviews, and put a nice interface in front.
• http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/BrianVanderHorst : Brian Van der Horst is an International NLP-trainer who has been a director for Repère, a French NLP institute, since 1984. He promised his site would contain a lot of articles!
• http://members.aol.com/Phaedral/home.htm : Robert Link's homepage contains a large section with a manual for a NLP practitioners course given by Adept.
• http://www.instatek.com/nlp/ : InstaTek's Neurolinguistic Programming and Hypnosis site - a site with introductions to both NLP and hypnosis, "best of" alt.psychology.nlp and alt.hypnosis archives, and active discussion groups on both NLP and hypnosis
• http://www.bogo.co.uk/andys/index.html : An Introduction to Stress Management, NLP and Hypnotherapy", by Andy Smith
• http://www.gla.ac.uk/~grkinfo2/combpsy.html : Stephen Murray's site has a number of references to NLP, Hypnosis and Cancer.
• http://www.creativity.co.uk/creativity/kitaoka.htm: spiritual Web site where Guhen Kitaok tried an authentic integration of the newest in the West (NLP) and the oldest in the East (the inner science of ancient India like Vedanta), also the homepage of Creativity Enhancement Ltd.

Some truly international links (non commercial)

• http://www.nlp.de maintained by Dr. Franz-Josef Huecker (CompuServe 100330,2603)
  This site contains large sections of Information in English, such as the NLP Research Data Base. It is also the largest e German spoken site, the result of a collaboration of several German NLP trainers, complete with info about institutes, books, etc. ("Erste deutschsprachige W3-Seite").
• http://www.info.fundp.ac.be/~nha/PNL0.html : a french spoken NLP site that resides in my country (Belgium)
• http://www.chez.com/pnl - another french spoken site in Belgium the site of Christian Vanhenten.
  Christian also organizes a french spoken NLP training group, called "Atelier PNL" (more info on the site)
• www.nlpnet.com., an electronic magazine from Spain, dedicated on NLP with useful information, articles,chat, forum, etc... (also contains an updated list of avaible books in NLP in spanish language with the their original title. The magazine title is "Chasquito" (translation of swicth)
• http://www.jet.es/~soiza/ : a spanish NLP site, listing the NLP institutes in Spain, and containing some basic introduction to NLP

Commercial

• http://www.nlpu.com: Robert Dilts' personal Web Site.
  Except for the commercial stuff, Robert is adding a new article and a new pattern to his site each month. His site in becoming quite large and offering a great content.
• http://www.aloha.com:80/~mind/index.html : a promotional web site from Tad James
• http://www.hypnosis.com : a page where a lot of books about NLP and hypnosis can be ordered from.
• http://www.nlp.at, an Austrian NLP server with an inter-active dictionary of NLP terms, linked with descriptions of NLP techniques, and with theoretical articles about NLP (in German), site of Walter Oetsch
• http://www.nlpinfo.com :
  from this site you can order NLP books, but it also contains info about events, conferences and some training institutes. It even carriers a few pages of humor. There is also an impressive list of NLP web sites, giving me an excuse not to mention all of them here!

There are now several mailing lists dealing with NLP. This link should help you locate them all!

NLPTALK

For the moment I mainly mention the most important public one in detail, NLPtalk (and its off-spring).
When I last checked (October 1997), the average message traffic for a week was between 30 and 100 messages.

The mailing list is supervised by a committee led by Jeff Oliver (e-mail: jefolivr@newton.dialix.com.au). It had over 200 subscriptions during March 1997. The old NLPTALK and IMAGESTREAMING mailing lists have been permanently closed. The list now has moved to a FindMail Mailing list. The problem there was that the ‘NLPTALK’ name already been taken - Findmail was archiving it - so the new list has been called NLPTALK-RESERVE. Just a historical accident.

• I have a FREE monthly newsletter for "APPLIED NEUROLINGUISTICS" - where the subcribers get each month some information about developments in the larger area of Emotional Intelligence. • Bernard Frit manages a mailing list called NLPADDICT. As you can guess addiction is an important topic there.

Notes on Netiquette

Advertising is not apreciated by everyone in the CompuServe-forums or on the Internet. It can easily start some flaming (especially in the AI Expert-forum). Therefor, I'd like to give the following advice to potential advertisers (especially for lengthy ads):

• post ads to the library
• warn the sysop of the forum in private of the upload
  (if you don't have confidence of your ad arriving)
• check one or two days later if it arrived
• send a NEUTRAL message to ALL (not too much sales talk) when the file arrives in the library.
• delete the ad from the library once it has expired
