This page is a part of "Merl's World on NLP", one of the first websites on NLP, created in 1995 on CompuServe out of a Frequently Asked Questions file on the topic.
The site has been resurrected because (1) its non-commercial, impartial nature and (2) much of the information here is still hard to find...

2. What do you need to begin, try, or learn more about NLP?

Depending on your learning style, there are different ways to learn more about NLP:
  • read some books and other publications;
  • talk to others about it (e.g. on CompuServe and Internet) i.e. the electronic meeting places;
  • follow some NLP training: start by attending NLP Practitioners Training, then take a Master Practitioners Training, and end with a trainers training, if you want to teach others about it.

  • above all: practice it! Remember: NLP is only 25% theory: the rest is learning by observing, by doing and by getting feedback.

2.1. Reading about NLP

The FAQ contains a separate page which discusses Reading about NLP.
This website also contains an extensive list of book reviews about NLP, emotional Intelligence and cognitive science.

2.3.1. Selecting a training

Already in 1998 there were over 250 trainers out there who were training NLP. Even if the trainer's list on this FAQ hasn't been updated since around 2001, it's clear that choosing hasn't become easier. In fact, since then many new trainers have been certified each year. So, how do you select one for you?
Well, this might help:

Mike Halbfish sent me some information on selecting a training, and I tried to put some structure in his writings. Later on Steve Andreas also sent in a contribution. Click on the link for the result: Selecting a training

2.3.2. List of trainers

I'm sorry - I decided to remove the link to this part of the FAQ because it was completely outdated - the last update was done in 2001.
