Dyno day

On March 24th,  2001 we had our first dyno day at LMBRacing in Wommelgem (Antwerp) - Belgium.

18 Cars of the Flanders MX-5 club, Miata-MX5 Roadster Club and  the MX5 Owners Club participated at this interesting day.

Below you can find the results ordered by power.  We can immediately see a few things:

The difference between the 1.6 and the 1.8 liter are nearly nihil.  Although the 1.6 mostly gets the advertised power (-5 to -10 hp for the standard cars ), the 1.8 is far below its factory power (-15 to -20 hp).  
Since the 1.6 and the 1.8 proof to have about the same power, they'll be about even in accelerating (because of the 1.8's higher wheight).  However, the 1.8 will drive a bit smoother since it has more torque.

The results of the forced induction cars are a lot lower then those of our american friends.  A Sebring Supercharger gets about 135-145 hp to the wheels over there (the manufacturer even claims 162 hp at the crank), while we're only getting 135-145 hp at the crank.  Same story for the turbos.  Whereas in the States, an FMII gets 200-210 hp to the wheels, we get that number at the engine.  I don't think it's because of bad settings of the dyno, since the results of the standard cars are about correct (although a bit low).  
They do apply a correction factor, to 'compensate' for the lower air pressure at altitude.  I suppose that this correction factor is a bit too optimistic (often 20-30%) and therefore represents things a bit better than what they really are.  Add 25% to our results and you have exactly the numbers they claim in the States.  That everybody makes his own conclusions, I'll just keep it at 'everything's big in America'.

Car manufacturars are often too optimistic too.  Just take a look at the difference between advertised power and measured power.  One of the testcars was a BMW 325i, rated at 170hp, which only had 155hp on our dyno (at the engine).
Same story for the 2001 miata.  In the US, it was being sold as having 155 hp (before its release, there were even rumours of 160 hp).  After numerous tests by famous car magazines, it appeared that the car had no more power than the old model (it's even a bit slower because of it's wheight).  Dyno tests proofed that it only has 140ish hp.  Mazda America now admits that the car only has 142 hp (Mazda Belgium says it has 146 hp BTW).

Although most of us already now for a long time that chip tuning isn't worth the money on a normal aspirated car, we found that out for ourselves.  On John's car, we tested Petra's 'black box' which was supposed to give 8% more power.  The result were humerous.  We gained 2-3 hp above 6000rpm, but lost 3 lb-ft over the entire range!  Judging by the black fumes the car ran way too rich which won't do any good on fuel consumption either.

One of the highlights of the day was Koen Hoornaert, who put down 118 hp on an almost standard car.  That's 2 hp over the factory rating!  From our club trips, I already knew that Koen has a very strong car, but these numbers were a plesant surprise for him too.  The Sebring owners were a bit disappointed, since their cars produced a lot less power then what Moss claims.
