The Spanish water dog of today is a mixture of 3 bloodlines.
The 3 bloodlines came from dogs of the "North", "Sierra" and
"Marismeño".
All these bloodlines were breeded together. It is however possible that several dogs shows
the characteristics of the specific bloodline, type. At this moment there is only one
Spanish water dog, but the 3 types are all correct to the standard.
The type "Sierra"
This dog is a little taller then the dogs from the north of Spain. He is very
robust, solid, the biggest are 54 cm in height. The ribs are more rounded, has many
woolly layers and has mostly a black and dark brown coat. Region is south of Spain.
Type "Marismeño"
The dogs from the swamps are called "Marismeño"
This are dogs without or less subhair, resulting to beautiful curls. Mostly born
with a dark brown coat.
He is a little smaller and longer as the type "Sierra". Not so robust, height 48
cm.
They are used as hunt dog to report. Region in the province of Huelva and Sevilla,
National Park of "Doñana".
Type "North"
This are the water dogs from the north of Spain
He is mostly used as a help with fishermen. Works like a Newfoundland dog, help to
pulling out the fishing net and catch the fish that drops overboard.
This water dog has a fine structure, more flat ribs. Mostly sandy clay or colored
coat.
More woolly coat with a high density, this is the reason why the coat has less curls.
The dog is a little suspicious from nature to people because of his independent activity,
work.
