What could one do with a miniature horse except take it out on a leash for a
walk?" We've been asked this question at least a hundred times. The big
disillusionment comes with the answer that these horses cannot be ridden, but
there is so much more... For example, they can be trained to drive, single or in
a pair. It is a discipline where the driver as well as the horse will have fun,
because these small horses love to workout. They can develop a strong power and
once they are well trained and in good physical condition, they will easily
transport two adult people in a light sulky for about 10 miles per day. Driving
is up and coming in Europe as well, and the first driving competitions for
miniature horses have been held.![]() Another amusing discipline is jumping. of course not with a rider on their back but on a long line. The handler runs along with the horse and makes it jump the obstacle without jumping himself. Some miniature horses are – like their jumping colleagues - very talented and easily jump their own height or even higher. In the US this is a National discipline and it is no exception that one or more horses jump a final clear round being 44 inches.
Those who love dressage will certainly encourage the work on the long lines. Miniature horses are very smart and gifted and very eager to learn. They easily learn tricks and are therefore very popular with the circus people. Whoever knows how to do dressage with the big equines will have no trouble practising this with the miniature horses. Aids in this case are not the legs, but the voice and the long whip. Mr Nötinger, master of the Cadre Noire of Saumur (France) who gives exhibitions of this work on the long lines with his Falabella, testifies that Dressage can be practised at a very high level. ![]() |
