About 1100 years ago, the first Icelandic sheepdogs were taken from
Norway to Iceland by the Vikings. There the breed has developed as it
has become now.
The Icelandic sheepdog is very likely and a good watchdog. It is a
lively dog and learns very quickly, it is social and likes to do the
boss a favor.
It loves human companionship. It will follow you anywhere and even will
sleep at your feet.
The Icelandic sheepdog does not like to be alone a big part of the day.
For this reason, he should never be kept in a kennel. It likes the
companion of other animals in his household.
It will often bark at running animals because of his herding nature, but
does not have a hunting nature. It will always keep track of you when
you go out for a walk.
It
is very intelligent and easy to train.
The Icelandic sheepdog is a sensitive and affectionate dog. It will
watch for strangers and bark but will never bite because it is not
aggressive at all. It likes children, but it does not mean that he will
allow everything. You should always be careful with children an never
leave a dog alone with children. A dog is a still dog.
You never have to wash it, but yo do have to brush it from time to time.
It does not have that doggy smell like other dogs do.
The Icelandic sheepdog can be shorthaired or longhaired. They all have
waterresistant coats with a thick and warm undercoat. All colours are
allowed, but 1 colour should be dominant.
Most of them have double dewclaws at the backlegs.
The dog stays lively and vital until high age, 15 years is not uncommon.
