About the movie

Tally Atwater is determined to capture the coveted news anchor position - a spot many assured her she would never achieve. Blazing a trail from small-town weathergirl to prime-time anchor, her meteoric rise to fame causes her to collide with an older newsman who becomes her mentor and lover. As their relationship grows, so too does Tally's celebrity to the point where her popularity begins to eclipse her lover's. Both a compelling drama and a love story, this movie is an absorbing portrait of a woman whose drive to succeed is as strong as her passion for life.

Starring Robert Redford, Michelle Pfeiffer, Stockard Channing, Joe Mantegna, Kate Nelligan, Glenn Plummer and James Rebhorn.
Produced by Jon Avnet, David Nicksay and Jordan Kerner.
Directed by Jon Avnet.

About the music

A unique combination of Newman's touching melodies for strings and piano and Latin American styles. The opening track sets the mood with a tender melody for guitar, flutes and strings, until it suddenly explodes into a mambo of some sort. The beautiful little piano melody that follows makes the dreamy piano-tune from The Linguini Incident come to mind, or even some of the melodies from How to Make an American Quilt or Scent of a Woman. This little melody is further developed in the main title, Up Close (track 6). Newman's use of strings here often reminds you of his similar approach to subdued orchestral sultriness for The Shawshank Redemption. Lots of romantic, subtly orchestrated tunes on this CD, but there's more. Try the dramatic undertone of Los Locos or Cellblock C or the bouncy rhythms of Philly Rebound and Uprise and you'll hear some pretty diverse types of music. Together with the two source-music tracks (Tito Puente's Hong Kong Mambo and Eddie Palmieri's Café), you get quite a surprising CD. The excellent sequencing makes Up Close And Personal a very nice soundtrack to listen to.
