Although with the modern navigation of today, such as GPS, DGPS, Loran-c, radio and radar bacons, one can think that the Lighthouses will become obsolete, and yes, many of them are already today abandonned, but many are serving now as emplacements for the antennas and equipment for the new navigation aids. Lighthouses have an unique structure and some are so well withstanding severe weatherconditions for centuries, that it would be a shame not to preserve this patrimonium for the next generations
By founding the ARLHS, radioamateurs help to promote public awareness of the role ham radio and light beacons have played in assisting and maintaining safety at sea. With their activations of Lighthouses around the world all year around and specially the last week-end of August each year the radio amateurcommunity is also helping to preserve the heritage and history of lighthouses and lightships by informing to a wide public the unique structure of lighthouses and also the beautiful environment they are situated in.
