Before the barges became engine-powered, they were pulled along the canal by sturdy Brabant horses. The magnificent animals were also used to plow the fertile, but heavy grounds of the region. A breeding trade developed, with an annual horse-market still being organized today. The deals were made in the nearby cafés, where the horses were celebrated on sanded glass panes. The barges are still used for local traffic.
The canal and the docks are now integrated into Brussels seaport, receiving high-trade ships.
