| Before the barges became engine-powered, they were
pulled along the canal by sturdy Brabant horses. The magnificent
animals were also used to plow the fertile, but heavy grounds of
the region. A breeding trade developed, with an annual horse-market
still being organized today. The deals were made in the nearby cafés,
where the horses were celebrated on sanded glass panes. |
The barges are still used for local traffic.

The canal and the docks are now integrated into Brussels
seaport, receiving high-trade ships.
