Background

Peter Goos joined the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Sciences of the Faculty of Applied Economics of the University of Antwerp in October 2004. Before, he was associated to the Department of Applied Economics of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven as a Fellow of the Fund for Scientific Research Flanders (Belgium). He holds a degree in commercial engineering and a Ph.D. in Applied Economics, both from the university of Leuven.

Activities

Research

Peter Goos obtained his Ph.D. in the field of econometrics and statistics. His main research topic is the optimal design of experiments. He published a book as well as several methodological articles on the design and analysis of blocked and split-plot experiments. Other interests of his in this area include discrete choice experiments, model-robust designs, experimental design for non-linear models and for multiresponse data, and Taguchi experiments. Applications of his work can be found in various disciplines including industrial experimentation, marketing, health economics and quality control. Peter's collaborators and co-authors include Heidi Arnouts (Universiteit Antwerpen), Alex Donev (Astra Zeneca), Marta Emmett (University of Sheffield), Jean-Jacques Garroi (Universiteit Antwerpen), Steve Gilmour (Queen Mary, University of London), Yuri Goegebeur (University of Southern Denmark), Bradley Jones (JMP), Roselinde Kessels (K.U.Leuven), Ivan Langhans (K.U.Leuven, CQ Consultancy), Jim Lucas (J.M.Lucas & Associates), Martina Vandebroek (K.U.Leuven), Eric Schoen (TNO, Universiteit Antwerpen), Sabine Verboven (Universiteit Antwerpen), Bart Vermeulen (K.U.Leuven) and Jie Yu (K.U.Leuven).

For his talk "Tailor-Made Design of Split-Plot Experiments" at the 48th Fall Technical Conference in 2004, Peter Goos received the Shewell Award for the best presentation. He received the 2006 ENBIS Young Statistician Award at the 6th annual conference of the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics in Wroclaw (Poland) in September.

Peter Goos serves on the editorial panel of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series C (Applied Statistics). He is also a member of the editorial review board of the Journal of Quality Technology and has acted as an occasional referee for the journals Applied Statistics, Canadian Journal of Statistics, Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics, Journal of Multivariate Analysis, Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, Statistics in Medicine and Technometrics. He has been a vice-president of the European Network on Business and Industrial Statistics (ENBIS) and is the current president of the Belgian branch of the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics (bENBIS).

A recent research project of Peter focuses on a totally different topic, namely client-centered vehicle routing. Other promoters of the project are Kenneth Sörensen (Universiteit Antwerpen) and Frits Spieksma (K.U.Leuven) . Ph.D. students that work on this project are Amir Salehipour (Universiteit Antwerpen), Patrick Schittekat (Universiteit Antwerpen) and Sofie Coene (K.U.Leuven).

Recently, Peter Goos took the initiative to found StatUA, a forum for statisticians and applied statisticians at the university of Antwerp.
