MANILA — Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo named
Eduardo Ermita on Tuesday the new secretary of National Defense, a post vacated
by Angelo Reyes on Aug 29 in an attempt to end controversy over the July 29
military mutiny against Arroyo.
Ignacio Bunye, the presidential spokesman, said Arroyo had appointed Ermita, a 68-year-old presidential adviser on the peace process and co-chair of the government panel negotiating peace with the secessionist Moro Islamic Liberation Front in the southern Philippines. (Kyodo News)
