After an interesting camp in Ukraine, I had started to study Russian. The time had come to put my Russian into practice. An SCI work camp in Kronshtadt, an island on the coast near St-Petersburg, offered a unique opportunity to combine a visit to one of Europe's most beautiful cities with Russian language practice. We worked in one of the fortresses on the Kotlin Island, just a few miles offshore. We did some renovation works and cleaning.
You can find more news and pictures of this work camp on the Sobaka group pages. I have added all the pictures that used to be on the old web site. There is also a message archive.
The town and fortress Kronshtadt is located on the Kotlin Island, which is situated in the Finnish Gulf. The history of Kronshtadt starts at the beginning of the 18th century as a military and trade port on the Baltic Sea. The volunteers will do restoration and cleaning works in a small fortress, Fort Konstantin.
