Several mythological backgrounds exist as far as Dragons are concerned. Maybe one of the best known Dragon would be Tiamat. She was one of the elder Gods in the ancient Babylonia,
Bearer of the skies and the Earth, ruler of the salt water. Her mate Aspu ruled the fresh water. When Aspu was killed, she was enraged.
Tiamat hurried to war against the younger Gods and rallied a formidable army, consisting of several Dragons and other fantastic creatures. She was eventually defeated by a mighty deity called Marduk, who used half of her body to roof up the sky. Her eyes became the sources of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Although I do not like a Dragon being defeated, this is of course just a "creation of the world" story, like so many others exist. Marduk was not really evil, neither was Tiamat. They just hated eachother's guts and got carried away. Of course this is the short version of the story. |
