Hello there,

We first became acquainted with the Beagles at the end of 1970. We were immediately struck by his glance and we went looking for more information. Books, information from other breeders and collecting as much information as possible about the character of the Beagle were very important to us.

At that moment our children were 3 and 7 and we had never been without a pet dog, we previously had a Basset Hound, a Basset Artésien Normand,a Pointer and several Bassets Fauve de Bretagne.

We were doing exhibitions with the Pointer at that time and that’s how we met the Beagle. There wasn’t too much information to find because in 1978 the Beagle wasn’t all that well known in Belgium. The exibitioners of that time were mainly foreigners.

We eventually found an English breeder who wanted to sell us two pups by scaling all sorts of dog magazines from in and out of the country.

These pups were the start of "Kennel Ter Elst".

The first litter was born in 1980, two pups.

In the meanwhile they had offered us a bitch from Luxembourg with English roots. She gave us a few litters out of which we selected and kept a few pups. The same year we heard that there was a stud dog available in Denmark, imported from The States, who had sufficient descendants there and ended up with us.

This stud dog was a big financial investment for us but we never regretted taking him into our care. On top of that it was a dog with a fantastic character, something he passed on to his children ! He excelled in all exhibitions both abroad and in Belgium, mainly with his movements and stamina.

From that time onwards we had several litters per year and we concluded that there were noticeable differences between the English descension and the American. There is mainly a big difference in character and size.

At this time (2005) we have seven American imports in our home. You can find them among the pictures on this site.
