Peter Van Sant - Escape In Style

Here comes the time that the saying “When you search, you find” comes to be true. And this is because this CD came to my hands after hours and hours of “interstellar” research and endless days of listening to any possible or impossible artists from wherever in the word.

Peter Van Sant (or Sante for the better acquainted), is an artist coming out of Belgium, boasting a 30 year long career which, however, and similarly to many Greek artists that would wish or tried to, failed to cross the borders of his small country and gain the credit he is entitled to.

Deeply rooted to the American pop tradition and what we have learned to refer to as Rhythm And Blues, simultaneously holding dear to the folk tradition of Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan, painting his music with the inevitable European culture of his far ancestors but also with the one of his contemporary idols (see the Rolling Stones), Peter Van Sant presents an utterly interesting blend consisting of all of the above together with a totally personal perspective of the matter.

With a clear, moving voice and boasting compositions that are usually remarkable and sometimes overwhelming, Peter and his band manage to climb up to that list of musicians that are destined to remain unknown and unappreciated. However, they will always be there to surprise and fascinate the one that will discover their worth. And if this is inevitable and deterministic, it doesn’t really matter. On the contrary, it gives you the same unique feeling of warmth, satisfaction and snugness you get when you discover the perfect beach and suddenly you realize that you are alone.

This CD was never released in Greece. Nevertheless, it is worth looking him up in the internet, maybe in a Belgium site of some sort, or wherever else you might get lucky and find him. And when you find him make sure you pay him a visit…

Ik heb het al verteld, zowel hier als in rockpages en de rockmachine, dat het voornaamste om met muziek om te gaan is het zoeken. Iedere dag te zoeken en steeds op zoek naar nieuwe geluiden, nieuwe melodieën nieuwe technieken, nieuwe gevoelens. Daarvoor is er internet om ons daarbij te helpen. Zo vinden we prachtige muziek, ja, precies, ik ontdekte dit ventje uit België, genaamd Peter Van Sant en "Sante" voor een paar fans, die met zijn muziek me echt verrast ...

Rock, blues, een beetje Amerikaanse folk, een dosis van Stones en Bob Dylan, een akoestische gitaar op zijn knieën, een minimale band rond zich, en dat uit het niets (waarom België waar er niets van deze muziek is) toont deze muzikant, dat moest hij in New York wonen, zijn naam een zeer grote zou worden. Met dertig (30!) jaar carrière achter de rug, vier of vijf albums waar niemand iets van weet, veel uren in kleine, donkere, berookte clubs en veel doorzettingsvermogen en liefde voor zijn vak is er nu zijn nieuwste album, "Escape In Style", dat op het laatste van vorig jaar verscheen, en uiteraard ging dit onopgemerkt voorbij aan de mainstream muziekgerichtheid van de mensen.
