Philip II King of Spain - name Philippines
King of Spain was the ruler of the Low
Countries (Belgium - Nehterlands). In that period the Philippines were
a colony of Spain.
The name Philippines refers to this period.

heavily influenced by Spain and the United States — as the Philippine
Islands were a Spanish colony for more than 350 years and an American

Ruim zevenduizend eilanden die zich uitstrekt tussen Australië en het
vasteland van Zuidoost-Azië. De inwoners van de Filippijnen (Filippino's)
behoren tot het mongoloďde ras. Voor bijna tachtig procent zijn het
Maleisiërs.
Mede door de versnippering van het grondgebied over talrijke eilanden
zijn de Filippijnen moeilijk bestuurbaar. Deze factoren en een slechte
economische situatie leidden in 1973 tot een nieuwe grondwet die aan
de president onbeperkte macht verleent.”

In Metro Manila (de hoofdstad inclusief de omringende voorsteden):
meer dan 11 miljoen inwoners. Grote milieuproblemen:
uitlaatgassen. De Pasig River en andere wateren in en rond
Manila zijn ernstig vervuild.
Bezienswaardigheden in Manila vormen o.a.:
-de oude stadskern Intramuros (met stadswallen en koloniale gebouwen)
-het aangrenzende Rizal Park (met Japanse en Chinese tuinen)
-het Cultural Center Complex (met verschillende culturele centra)
-Chinatown (Chinese wijk)
-het Malacańang Palace (vooral bekend geworden door de val van de
roemruchte dictator Marcos)
-de zakenwijk Makati (warenhuizen, restaurants en discotheken)
-het openluchtmuseum Nayong Pilipino
Festivals: De meeste
Filippijnse festivals hebben een religieuze oorsprong. Dankzij het
rooms-katholieke geloof zijn de festivals vooral geconcentreerd in en
rond de kerst- en paastijd.
Hanengevechten
Typisch volksvermaak . De twee vogels, waarvan de sporen zijn
versterkt met vlijmscherpe mesjes of ijzeren pennen, vechten door tot
een van hen dood neervalt. Er gaan weddenschappen mee gepaard, waarbij
soms grote geldsommen worden ingezet.”
Snorkelen en duiken : zeer populair.
Island hopping': op
korte tijd veel eilanden bezoeken per vliegtuig als per boot.
Talen: Filipino en
zowat overal Engels. De twee belangrijkste inheemse talen zijn Tagalog
(vooral gesproken in Centraal-Luzon en op Mindoro en Palawan) en
Cebuano (Cebu en andere centraal gelegen delen van de archipel). De
officiele landstaal Filipino is gebaseerd op het Tagalog .

Jeepneys bepalen het straatbeeld van de Filippijnse steden en vormen
het meest populaire vervoermiddel voor korte trajecten.
Taxi
Betrekkelijk goedkoop - meter doen inschakelen - vooraf prijs
afspreken voor langere ritten.
