Early Victorian Solid Silver Snuffbox made by Edward Smith in 1854
Handsome Genuine early victorian solid silver snuffbox, originally given to Thomas Darling 1816-1893. "Son of George Darling, M. D., Thomas was educated at Charterhouse and St. John’s College, Cambridge (BA 1838, MA 1841). In 1839, he took Holy Orders, and subsequently became Incumbent of Thanington (near Canterbury), and in 1848 Rector of St. Michael Royal with St. Martin-Vintry, City of London. His works include: Hymns for the Church of England (London: Longmans, 1855 & later editions)".
A fine large size, it measures 85mm x 50mm x 12mm and weighs 83 grams.. Has a superb more uncommon slim-line rectangular shape with rounded corners, wit a flush-fit and recessed hinged silver lid, a real sign of quality, and it is beautifully all-over decorated with floral engraving and engine-turned engraving on all sides. There is a large full length protuding edge lip on the front to assist opening and the interior is gilt-lined. Has an elaborate cartouche on the lid which has the name of the original owner, „Thomas Darling” and the date „1855”.
Hallmarks: The anchor stamp of the Birmingham Assay Office, the lion passant silver stamp, the sovereigns duty mark of Queen Victoria and the date letter "F" for the year 1854. The silversmiths initials are "E S" (Edward Smith).
