BACK TO THE FUTURE II

"Re used or not, the level of fun is what makes this score so pleasant"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

I'll start this review by saying "Attention ladies and gentlemen! Those people that want to hear the music of the first Back to the Future score so badly will do just fine with the second installment of Alan Silvestri". I know it isn't the same but Back to the Future II shares a lot in common if you look at it, first of all the main theme with all its sub themes but also simply the way it connects to the story overall. You don't have to tell me that this score offers something else but in style it is really close to the first. Surely replica or not "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and Silvestri just does that. The soundtrack works with all its wonders in the movie, the fan of movie music is offered the thrill on CD and the concept gives you a run for its money. Going to the future was never as fun as this with the listen of Back to the Future part II.

The theme of the movie is always the biggest sign of success. If you like the theme you will adore in most cases the overall score and goodness me for saying it but "if there is someone that doesn't like Silvestri's brave theme then go to hell", as a movie music fan of course. It is and always will be one of Silvestri's biggest achievements and it truly blessed any movie in the saga. The theme doesn't return as much as it did in the first which is good and bad in some ways. The second movie is perhaps darker in tone and several moments show this 'My Father!' and '"Alternate 1985"' but in truth there is still a lot that sounds heroic and cool. 'Main Title' that directly explodes after several seconds on score with its excellent theme and the futuristic 'Hoverboard Chase' with its replica sounding chase music of the first, it still remains an excellent moment of music. Of course things go a bit different with the sneaky sounding 'The Book' when Marty tries to steal the book in Strickland's office and 'Tunnel Chase' with the building suspension mood we all know Silvestri can bring.

But my favorite moment in the movie and surely thanks to Silvestri's music is 'Western Union', when Marty says "There is only one man that can help me" and then Silvestri's main theme explodes in true fanfare measurements on screen. No doubt to mention that it brings a hell of a feel in the movie. The last track as usual ends with all the moments we heard before on the disc. I suppose I don't have to tell you that Back to the Future II is an excellent listen, perhaps giving the fans nothing much of truly original material but the fun isn't gone and the listen remains enjoyable for all its worth. It surely is an interesting purchase if people need more music then the compilation version released several years later. Of course since then the score somehow disappeared of the market but for those who find it and like what the music brings on screen should take the opportunity with all their luck. It isn't truly new but it surely listens amazing for an adventure score. Why are we complaining then?
