FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR

"Simplistic but entertaining kids score by Silvestri brings a difference in his career"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

Sometimes its really fun to turn back to those little scores that made them big. Everyone has one of them that sounds just right, not good but not bad either. I consider Flight of the Navigator as one of Alan Silvestri's best examples in this category. This score will not please many fans, but it sure will not bore them. So you can see that even the greatest of their time have used their skills on these kind of movies. I believe the fans will know something about this score, for those who know nothing and don't have anything against throwing their money against a short but pleasant listen will feel that Flight of the Navigator just packs the right doses and flair.

I must of course confess, this is not something that sounds Alan Silvestri. It has the trademarks, most importantly the feel and sound of the score The Clan of the Cave Bear, composed in the same year and one of Back to the Future's trademarks is heard once or twice. But otherwise it offered some nice themes, the rather cool moments that you adored when you were still young. It surely shows that Silvestri composed music, simple but effective so that younger kids especially would accept them. I especially liked the nice theme in 'Robot Romp' as effective and cool. The main theme of Flight of the Navigator sounds mysterious but it becomes more adventurous when it also is used faster and bolder, meaning not bold enough of orchestral power but just right, 'Ship Drop' is the best example of this.

See Flight of the Navigator as your background listen, short but to the point, somewhat simple but effective and overall a pleasant listen throughout. I will not have to say this to the fans of Silvestri, but those that are still looking, I was surprised to find this score for a normal price, without much difficulty. So, people that know what there expecting and those that see it as a worthwhile investment should be grateful. But its always a question. It works fine as background material, its pleasant but people that haven't heard nothing of it, and want to experience some Silvestri products should try perhaps something a bit more mature, something that deserves the price and search. I on the other hand knew what to expect and remembered what it sounded like, I was pleased with the end result.
